DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track and field teams completed the first of three days at the 2024 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Northern Illinois University at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex Thursday, May 9. After day one, the Eastern women stand in first with 22 points while the men are third with 21 points.

» The Eagles had one individual champion on the first day of competition.
» Seven Eagles advanced to the final heat in their respective events with the men securing four and the women notching three.

How it Happened – Women
Esme Davies (Lake District, England/Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) and Sofia Ivanko (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Matthew's College) highlighted the women's performance as they placed second and fifth, respectively in the 10,000m run. Davies crossed the finish line in 34:38.00 while Ivanko did so in a personal-best 34:56.98, improving upon her fifth-best program time.
Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) took third in the hammer throw with a toss of 56.99m (186-11) for six points. Isabella Brent (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divina Child) also scored in the event, notching two points as she slotted seventh, besting her previous seventh-best program mark with a 52.95m (173-08) launch.
Both Eagles in the 1,500m prelims advanced to the finals. Paige Marchant (London, Ontario/Catholic Central) placed fifth in 4:29.20 and Anita Zaro (Timisoara, Romania/Faculty of Physical Education and Sport) finished in 12th in 4:33.31.
Saraiah Walkes (Manatee County, Fla./The-Out-of-Door-Academy) secured her spot in the final heat of the 200m dash with a third-place finish in the preliminary round, as she finished the race in a personal-best 23.58.
How it Happened - Men
Ryan Johnson (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) was Eastern's lone individual champion of the day as he claimed gold in the hammer throw with a 65.17m (213-09) heave. The Eagles also snagged silver in the event as Jake McEachern (Lloydminster, Alberta/Lloydminster Comprehensive) placed second with a personal-best 63.65m (208-10) mark, a throw that ranks him seventh in program history. Together the freshmen duo scored 18 points for the Eagles.
In the decathlon, Samuel Jeffery (Fonthill, Ontario/E.L. Crossley Secondary) performed well, he currently stands second with 3,554 points, the fifth-best day-one total in school history. Jeffery set decathlon personal-best marks in each event of the first day, highlighted by a second-place finish in the long jump (6.93m (22-09.00) and 400m dash (51.20). His long jump leap marked the second farthest in Eastern decathlon history, while his 400m performance went down as the fourth.
The EMU men performed well in the 400m hurdles, with Kayenn Mabin (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) punching his ticket to the finals with a personal-best 52.72 for a second-place finish, immediately followed by Gabe Singh (Toledo, Ohio/Sylvania Northview/Oakland) in third in 53.32, a time that also qualified for the finals.
In the 200m dash prelims, Callum Robinson (Goderich, Ontario/St. Anne's Catholic Secondary/Simon Fraser) and Kyle Martin (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron) both advanced to the finals. Robinson finished fifth in 20.98 with Martin trailing in sixth in an outdoor personal-best 21.02.
Joey Furlong (Deer Park, Ill./Barrington) rounded out the men's performances for the day with a fifth-place outing in the 10,000m run in a personal-best time, 30:41.36.
