ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Despite out-hitting the University of Michigan, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped the second game of a home and home series to Michigan today, April 2, at Ray Fisher Stadium.
After run-ruling the Wolverines in the first match up of the season, 14-4, March 19, Sophomore Drew Jones (Cleveland, Ohio/Brush/Ohio State) (0-2) started and took the loss on the mound for Eastern Michigan (11-16, 6-3 MAC) in today's contest. Freshman Liam Baker (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two innings, allowing zero earned runs on two hits, while walking three and striking out two.
How it Happened
The Eagles were trailing 9-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Eastern scored twice in the inning, including one on a solo shot from junior Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich./Essexville Garber).
The Eagles' deficit grew to 12-2 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fifth inning. EMU scored once on an RBI single off the bat of junior Aidan Arbogast (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson/Mid-Michigan C.C./Kellogg C.C.), which brought the score to 12-3 in favor of the Wolverines.
Michigan expanded their lead to 18-3 before the Eastern Michigan offense got back in action, reducing that lead to 18-4 in the sixth. The Eagles scored once on an RBI single from Cory Taylor (Shelbyville, Ind./Shelbyville).
The Green and White kept the Wolverines off the board before narrowing the gap further in the seventh. Senior Logan Milene (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century) and senior Glenn Miller (Pentwater, Mich./Pentwater/Spring Arbor) each scored a run for the Eagles in the inning, bringing the score to 18-6 in favor of Michigan. The ballgame ended with that seventh inning rally falling short.
Game Notes
» Hugo homered in the top half of the fourth inning, putting the Eagles on the board, and collecting his fifth bomb of the season, the second-highest total on the team to teammate Kyle Schroedle (Redding, Calif./University Prep/Crown College) (seven). The junior would single in his next at-bat for his sixth multi-hit outing of the season.
» Arbogast continued his strong play of late. The former junior college standout posted another two-hit day, the third of his EMU tenure and third in his previous four games. Singling through the left side in the top of the fifth and scoring an EMU baserunner, Arbogast tabbed his seventh RBI of the season. He now has recorded at least one RBI in his past five games played.
» Jad Oestrike (Tomball, Texas/Tomball Memorial) drove in the first run of his career as he worked the count full before drawing a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning.
» Cooper Vance (New Waterford, Ohio/Mohawk) went 2-for-3 at the plate for his eighth game of the season with multiple hits. Vance drove in one Eagle on the base paths today for his 19th RBI, the second-highest total on the squad.
» Taylor tabbed two hits and an RBI in the contest, bringing his total to eight multi-hit games and 23 RBI on the year. His 23 driven-in is the highest mark on the team so far this season.
» Baker tied a career-high with two strikeouts on the mound in the midst of a career-long appearance as he totaled 2.0 IP, again relinquishing zero earned runs. The freshman right-hander has allowed just one earned run in his young collegiate career (7.1 IP), after allowing one earned run in his appearance against Morehead State University, March 15, Baker has yet to allow an earned run in his last four appearances on the mound.
» With 11 hits to Michigan's ten, the Eagles out-hit their opponent for the 16th time this season, producing a 9-7 record in such games. Overall, EMU has out-hit its opposition in 16-of-27 games thus far.
Historical Notes
» Today's contest marked the 190th all-time between the Eagles and Wolverines. After the result, Eastern holds a 65-123-2 when facing Michigan.
