Johnson wins shot put, discus throw, and hammer throw while Eagles claim 13 events

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) Ryan Johnson secured a trio of event wins as the Eastern Michigan University track and field programs completed a two-meet, in-state weekend as the Eagles attended the Chippewa Classic, hosted by Central Michigan University at Lyle Bennet Outdoor Track Facility in Mount Pleasant, Mich., April 13, and the Jack Shaw Invite, hosted by Western Michigan University at Kanley Track in Kalamazoo, Mich., April 13.
 
At CMU, Johnson (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) placed first in the shot put at a personal-best 15.30m (50-02.50), discus throw at a personal-best 47.03m (154-03), and hammer throw at 62.33m (204–06).

Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) earned a pair of first-place finishes in the discus throw with 47.03m (154-03) and hammer throw at 62.33m (204-06).
 
At WMU and joining Johnson and Cadwell as Eagles to win multiple events, Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C./Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts) raced to first in the women's 100 and 200m dashes in 11.88 and 24.72 seconds, respectively, while Kyle Martin (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron) was first in the men's 100 and 200m dashes in a personal-best 10.68 (PB) and 21.64 seconds, respectively, to lead a group of nine different Eagles to earn an event win Saturday.
 
Weekend Notes
» EMU recorded 13 event wins by nine different student-athletes.
» The Eagles earned 18 outdoor personal-best performances, with the women notching 12 and the men securing six.
» Johnson was the only Eagle to tally multiple personal-best outings.
 
How it Happened – Chippewa Classic, April 13
 
On the men's side, Johnson won three events, which included the shot put at 15.30m (50-02.50), discus throw at 47.03m (154-03), and hammer throw at 62.33m (204–06). He edged Jake McEachern (Lloydminster, Alberta/Lloydminster Comprehensive) by one centimeter in the discus throw as McEachern's throw totaled a personal-best 47.02m (154-03). McEachern also recorded a second-place finish in the hammer throw at 58.88m (193-02).
 
For the women, Cadwell built on her reigning MAC Athlete of the Week honor, claiming first in the discus throw with a 44.47m (145-10) throw and the top spot in the hammer throw at 53.55m (175-08) as EMU went 1-2-3 in the hammer throw with Isabella Brent (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child) taking second at 49.46m (162-03) and Aleah Johnson (Botkins, Ohio/Botkins) claiming third at 47.71m (156-06). Claire Allen (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich Community) was second in shot put, launching 12.92m (42-04.75).

In addition to Davis' two victories (100m: 11.88; 200m: 24.72), four other EMU women placed first as Tijana Japundzic (Belgrade, Serbia/Technical School "New Belgrad") claimed the 400m hurdles in 1:08.77, Destiney Rose (Boerne, Texas/Boerne Champion) won the 800m run in a personal-best 2:19.51 to go with a second place finish in the 1,500m run, Natalie Buratczuk (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles North) took the high jump by clearing 1.65m (5-05.00), and Elise Gregory's (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) 29.94m (98-02) was enough to secure the top spot in the javelin throw.
 
On the men's side, in addition to Martin's two event wins (100m:10.68; 200m: 21.64), Ousman Kamara (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) topped the competition in the high jump by clearing 2.00m (6-06.75).
 
Up Next
The Eagles are scheduled to travel to a trio of meets next weekend as EMU will compete at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., April 19; the Aggie Invitational in Greensboro, N.C., April 19-20; and LSU Alumni Gold in Baton Rouge, La., April 20.
