Eagles raced Crimson Tide in an exhibition-style race

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University rowing team opened its spring slate with an exhibition-style race against the University of Alabama Saturday, March 2, at the Black Warrior River.

No team scores or official times were kept as the crews raced against each in varsity fours and varsity eights with challenging current conditions on the river.

POST RACE QUOTES

"We had a great week of training. For the first time in five years, we got all of our planned water sessions in so we felt really good going into racing today," Head Coach Kemp Savage said. "Even with a head current double last year, all the boats had faster times and closed the gaps between us and Alabama. This was the perfect way to establish our spring water season. Now we get back to training to find the speed we are really capable of finding."

"This past week went really well, it was so nice to be able to train on the water everyday and spend so much time with my teammates," freshman Natalie Prairie (Clifton, Mich./Bishop McNamara Catholic) "The energy this week was great and we got better as a team. In the 2V we stayed calm throughout the race and executed what we had worked on all week, it was cool to see the hard work pay off. We still have work to do and a few things to clean up but I'm excited to see what this season will bring."

"The team really showed up ready to work hard this week and it showed. We were able to make a ton of progress and have some fun in the process," freshman Megan Fowler (Belleville, Mich./Belleville) said. "After all we were able to accomplish this week, I am excited to see what we will achieve in the upcoming spring season. In today's races we were able to execute what we were working on very well, and we have a good idea of what we need to work on to prepare for our next races. It was an encouraging way to both end our training week and to kick off our spring season."
