DADE CITY, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — Could the first day of the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team spring season get any better? Competing in the MAC/A10 Challenge Monday, Feb. 5, the Eagles went 2-0 on the day to advance to Tuesday's championship match versus top-seeded Ball State University on the par 72, 7,153 yard Lake Jovita Golf Course.
The third-seeded Eagles, who won the event in 2015, 2016, and 2022, defeated No. 6 Loyola University, 3.5-2.5, in the opening round. They then edged No. 2 seeded Spiders of the University of Richmond, 4.5-1.5, in the champions bracket in the afternoon.
On Tuesday, No. 4 George Washington meets No. 2 Richmond in a third-place matchup, with No. 5 Dayton and No. 7 Central Michigan battling for fifth place, and No. 8 Ohio and No. 6 Loyola dueling for seventh place.
How It Happened
» Schools are competing in teams of six with the seeds determined by their current rankings. Each of the six matches is worth one point to the winner. If the competitors end up all-square after 18 holes, each school receives ½ point. The school with the most points after the six matches wins.
» Unlike stroke play, in which the unit of scoring is the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds of golf, match play scoring consists of individual holes won, halved, or lost. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point. Golfers play as normal, counting the strokes taken on a given hole. The golfer with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the golfers tie, then the hole is halved. Also, once a player is "up" more holes than holes are remaining to play, the match is over.
» EMU had two players post perfect days with 2-0 marks while another went 1-0-1.
» Eastern Michigan won three of the six matches against Loyola in the opening round. The Eagles had no trouble in the morning, with just two of the matches making it to the 18th hole.
» Senior Patrick Deardorff (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) cruised to a 7&6 decision over Jackson Overton, while senior Cam Kellett (London, Ontario/Saint Thomas Aquinas-Nevada) closed out Zach Walsh by a 5&3 margin.
» Junior Zander Gibson (Concord, Ohio/ Notre Dame Cathedral Latin/Rider) rolled to a 1 up victory over Zach Mulhearn.
» Sophomore Ryan Somerville (Aurora, Ontario/Aurora) halved with the Ramblers' Charlie Kulwin
» LU's two wins came at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions when Sebastian Kasun downed freshman Avery Mahoney (Burlington, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School), 2&1, while Ryan Walsh defeated Nathaniel Gray Lamont (Guelph, Ontario-Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute), 5&3.
» EMU's success continued in the second match of the day, with the Eagles taking four of the matchups and tying another.
» Kellett cruised to a 4&3 triumph over Richmond's Cole Ekert, while Mahoney defeated Lou Baker (RICH), 3&2.
» Gibson added his second win of the day with a 5&4 win over Quin Polin.
» Gray Lamont posted a 5&4 decision over Quin Polin.
» All-time at the event, Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's crew has posted a 17-8-6 record in match play.
