YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) --  Episode 15 of Eastern Insider with Tom Helmer and Greg Steiner kicked off with a thrilling recap of Eastern Michigan women's basketball's stunning comeback against Xavier. Down 20 at halftime and facing a scorching 70% shooting performance by Xavier, EMU seemed outmatched. However, the team flipped the script in the second half, outscoring Xavier 24-3 in the third quarter and maintaining their momentum for a decisive victory. The win showcased EMU's newfound defensive intensity, a transformation head coach Sahar Nusseibeh has worked tirelessly to instill.

The segment highlighted the standout performance of Elena Cabello, whose timely three-pointers electrified the crowd. Her confidence, epitomized by a poised celebration after a crucial corner shot, reflected a team hitting its stride. Coach Nusseibeh, showered in celebratory water bottles post-game, admitted she could hardly recall her halftime speech—a testament to the emotional charge of the moment.

Helmer and Steiner noted that this victory, EMU's second over Xavier in program history, snapped an 0-5 start to the season, releasing the pressure and rejuvenating the squad. While the road ahead includes tough opponents like Notre Dame, the duo emphasized that the team's focus on MAAC play positions them as contenders capable of making waves.

Transitioning to men's basketball, the hosts reflected on EMU's mixed results during the Houston Christian Tournament, highlighting resilience despite a tough overtime loss to Detroit Mercy. They also praised the standout week of Da'Sean Nelson, named MAC Co-Player of the Week, as EMU faces challenging non-conference matchups ahead.

The episode also previewed an insightful discussion with Director of Compliance Nick Smith, tackling the complexities of roster management in the transfer portal era, and teased updates on EMU's signing day activities and evolving athletic strategies.

Segment 1 - Nick Smith
Nick Smith, Eastern Michigan University's Director of Compliance, joined Tom Helmer to discuss the hectic and ever-evolving landscape of college athletics, especially during the intense December-January period.

Smith described this time as the "Super Bowl season" for his role. "It's crazy with portal signing day, portal opening next Monday... just getting kids admitted, getting kids obviously that decide to leave, getting them all situated," Smith explained. "December is not just a crazy time for coaches, but for compliance and academics as well."

Smith also delved into the recent changes in recruiting, particularly the removal of the National Letter of Intent. "That went away less than six weeks ago," he noted. "Each institution now is responsible for creating their own athletic financial aid agreement." This change, while easing paperwork, also meant that each university now writes its own agreements, making the process more tailored but also more complex.

A major topic was the shift in roster management, especially with potential NCAA changes to football rosters. "It could get interesting here in the next three to four months," Smith said. "With roster limits, it could flood the portal, and people at higher schools might be cut and looking for a home at lower schools."

Smith also reflected on the practical side of compliance, such as the paperwork involved in managing transfers. "We will have 20-30 kids to process between December 9th and January 6th," he said, emphasizing the complexity of ensuring these students are eligible and properly integrated.

With so much on his plate, Smith encouraged families and athletes to stay informed. "It's important that parents and athletes are aware of what's happening in college athletics to make the best decisions for their futures," he stressed.

Smith wrapped up with a lighthearted moment, noting that during this busy time, his phone never stops ringing. But, despite the hectic schedule, Smith remains passionate about his role and the importance of supporting student-athletes.

Segment 2 - Scott Wetherbee
Greg Steiner sat down with Eastern Michigan Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee to discuss a variety of pressing topics, including Giving TrueDay, the challenges of college athletics, and the future of EMU sports. Wetherbee emphasized the importance of Giving TrueDay on Tuesday, a day focused on increasing the number of donations rather than the dollar amounts. "This year, we're focusing more on getting people into the cycle of giving and creating a culture of participation," he said. While larger donations are essential, Wetherbee highlighted the power of smaller gifts, noting, "Every little bit counts. Whether it's $50 or $200, it adds up and directly supports our student-athletes."

Turning to the evolving landscape of college sports, Wetherbee discussed the challenges posed by NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals and the need for new facilities. He noted the delicate balance of maintaining ongoing projects while ensuring day-to-day needs are met. "We're trying to finish up improvements to our baseball stadium, and we're also looking at a new dining hall for the Westview Apartments," Wetherbee said, highlighting the evolving needs of EMU's athletic infrastructure.

Wetherbee also spoke candidly about the financial challenges facing the athletic department. The recent house settlement, which will cost the university over $400,000 annually, will require significant fundraising efforts. "I'll have to raise the revenue to offset that," Wetherbee explained. With the rise of the transfer portal and NIL deals affecting recruitment, he emphasized the importance of building a collective to support student-athletes and level the playing field. "We have to compete with teams offering tens of thousands of dollars in NIL money, and we're just not there yet."

Finally, Wetherbee reflected on the future of the Mid-American Conference, suggesting that despite rumors of potential expansion, the conference remains strong. "We're comfortable with 13 teams, and we want to continue to build on our close-knit group," he said, stressing the need for leadership in navigating the changing collegiate landscape.

As EMU continues to evolve, Wetherbee's focus remains clear: to secure the future of student-athletes through community support, strategic investments, and a commitment to excellence.
