EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team fell in its road opener as the Eagles were downed by Michigan State University, 95-46, inside the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich., Nov. 11. The Eagles (0-3) were paced by Sisi Eleko, who recorded her second consecutive double-double as she scored 25 points and added 12 rebounds in the game as EMU held the Spartans (3-0) under 100 points for the first time this year.
 
How It Happened
The high-powered offense of the Spartans helped the hosts to a 29-14 lead following the first quarter with Sisi Eleko (Montreal, Quebec/New Hope Academy/Canisius) scoring 11 points for the Eagles while Olivia Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind./South Side) added a triple of her own in the stanza. It was more of the same in the second as the Spartans added 29 points while the Eagles were held to just 11 as Eleko added four while Olivia Westphal (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park/Duquesne)(three), Mackenzie Amalia (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk/Canisius)(two), and Brooklyn Thrash (Wayne, Ohio/Elmwood/Canisius)(two) each chipped in points.
 
Following intermission, the game slowed a bit as the hosts outscored the Eagles, 15-9, in the stanza for a 73-34 lead. Eastern was limited to 1-of-7 shooting from the floor but was 7-of-10 from the free throw stripe. In the final quarter, MSU added 22 points to the Eagles' 15 as Eastern became the first team this season to hold the Spartans under 100 points.
 
Game Notes
» Sisi Eleko recorded a double-double for the second consecutive game as she finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds, one game after scoring 17 points and grabbing 16 boards against Alabama A&M (Nov. 9). The 25 points scored by Eleko are the highest by an individual against MSU this year, surpassing the 19 scored by Oakland's Maddy Skorupski.
» Olivia Westphal drained four, three-point baskets in the game, making it three consecutive games to open the season in which she has connected on three or more triples in the same game. She opened the season with a career-best five makes against Texas State before adding three against Alabama A&M last time out.
» Mackenzie Amalia handed out a team-high six assists, giving her 22 on the year. She added five points as well.
» The 25 points scored in the first half by Eastern marked the most Michigan State allowed in the opening half this year after holding Oakland Yale to 18 points each. Additionally, the halftime deficit of 33 points for Eastern marked the second lowest of the season for an MSU opponent after leading Yale by 32 and Oakland by 40.
 
Historical Notes
» With the loss, the Eagles fell to 0-3 on the year while the Spartans improved to 3-0.
» Eastern is now 1-17 all-time against Michigan State and 0-10 when playing the Spartans in East Lansing. The Eagles have lost six consecutive meetings against the Spartans as well.
» The Eagles are now 172-165 all-time against teams from the state of Michigan.
» Eastern holds a 14-52 record when playing a member of the current membership of the Big Ten Conference.
