CORAL GABLES, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – Savannah de Bock
finished second overall while Mariana Vega earned her first collegiate top 20 finish to pace the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team to a strong showing at the 2024 Hurricane Invitational, Oct. 28-29, in Coral Gables, Fla., in the final fall tournament for the Eagles. Eastern finished ninth overall in the event played on the par-72, 6,175-yard Biltmore Golf Course outside of Miami.

How It Happened
In the team standings, the Eagles' 29-over, 893 (299-300-294) placed Eastern ninth in the 11-team field as the University of Miami, who played host to the event, won the tournament at 12-under, 852. Florida Gulf Coast University (871), the University of South Alabama (872), the University of Iowa (878) and the University of North Florida (884) rounded out the top five.

Individually, de Bock (Ecaussinnes-d'enghien, Belgium/Institut de l'Enfant-Jésus-Lycée/Georgia) posted her fifth top eight showing in five tournaments this fall as she took runner-up honors at six-under, 210 (71-68-71). To earn her third top two finish of the season, de Bock carded a 68 in the second round to mark her fifth round of 69-or-lower through 15 rounds played. Her 210 is her second-best score of the year and the second-lowest recorded in EMU history behind her own school record of 204 (Golfweek Red Sky Classic, Sept. 23-25) and gives her five of the top seven scores all-time at Eastern.

De Bock was not the only Eagle to earn a top 20 finish as Vega (Barranquilla, Columbia/Colegio Karl C. Parrish) tied for 17th at three-over, 219 (76-73-70). It marked the second tournament in a row in which the freshman posted multiple rounds of par-or-better scores while also matching her collegiate low of 219 she shot one week earlier at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational (Oct. 21-23). Her fellow freshman, Maddysun Beeching (Camberley, Surrey, England/Millfield School) also had a career day as she shot 12-over, 228 (83-72-73) to record her lowest collegiate score after dropping 15 strokes from her previous tournament.

The three remaining Eagles in the field included Riley Kim (Aldie, Va./Lightridge), who tied for 44th with Beeching after shooting 228 (76-79-73); Julianna Go (San Juan, Philippines/St. Jude Catholic School/King) tied for 56th at 20-over, 236 (76-80-80); and Amaya Melendez (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) tied for 61st at 28-over, 244 (84-80-80).

Historical Notes
» The team's round three score (294) ranks as the fourth-lowest of the season and among the top 25 in program history.
» Eastern shot 893 for the tournament, which ties for its second-lowest score of the year and ranks tied for ninth all-time.
» Savannah de Bock has shot par or better in 14-of-15 rounds played this year and is a combined 28-under. Her runner-up finish is her second of the season and third top two showing after winning the Golfweek Red Sky Classic. All time, she has finished in the top eight in all five fall tournaments.
» Savannah de Bock's 210 score is her second-best collegiate score and the second-best in program history behind the school-record 204 she used to win the Golfweek Red Sky Classic title. She now has five of the top seven scores in program history.
» Freshman Mariana Vega earned her first collegiate top 20 finish as she tied for 17th. She shot a 3-over 219 to match the career-low she recorded one week at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Hawai'i.
