AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)
– The Eastern Michigan University football team came back from an 18-point deficit for the second week in a row, but a late touchdown by the University of Akron proved to be the difference as the Eagles dropped a 25-21 Mid-American Conference game inside InfoCision Stadium in Akron, Oct. 26. The Eagles fell to 5-3 on the year and 2-2 in league action while the host Zips improved to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in MAC play.

How It Happened
The Eagles found themselves down, 8-0, at the end of the first quarter before seeing the hosts take an 18-0 lead at the break. Following the team's first scoreless opening half since the Sept. 23, 2023, game at Jacksonville State University, the Eagles responded by ripping off 21 consecutive points to take the lead midway through the fourth quarter.

To get back in the game, Cole Snyder (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern/Rutgers/Buffalo) connected on a pair of touchdown passes to Jere Getzinger (West Branch, Mich./Ogemaw Heights) with the tight end pulling in scores from two and 18-yards out. It marked his second and third career touchdowns with all three being scored against the Zips after his first came last year at home in double overtime. In the fourth quarter, the Eagles marched the ball down the field, starting from their own one-yard line, with Delbert Mimms III (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis/NC State) pushing it in from one-yard out to make it 21-18.

UA reclaimed the lead, 25-21, with a 21-yard touchdown pass with 3:59 remaining with Eastern having two more chances at the win, including the final drive seeing a 30-yard heave into the end zone fall the ground in a scrum as time expired.

Game Notes
» Jere Getzinger scored the first points of the game for the Eagles on a two-yard pass play from Cole Snyder midway through the third quarter and added his second of the night later in the stanza. The scores are the second and third of Getzinger's career with his first coming against Akron last year, Nov. 14, 2023, to secure the win for EMU in double overtime. Getzinger added a second score in the third quarter, marking his first multiple touchdown game of his career. The two touchdown grabs were the only two passes caught by Getzinger in the game, who finished with 20 yards.
» With two touchdown grabs, Jere Getzinger is the third receiver this season – and the second tight end – to record multiple scoring grabs in the same game. The first to do so was TE Max Reese (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) with his pair against Jacksonville State, Sept. 14, with WR Terry Lockett Jr. (St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha Academy/Michigan State) accomplishing the feat with a pair last week, Oct. 19 at home against Central Michigan.
» Cole Snyder entered the game with seven touchdowns passing on the season before picking up two at Akron. He has now thrown for five touchdowns in the past two games after throwing for three against Central Michigan, Oct. 19. Snyder ended the game with 346 yards on 28-of-47 passing with a long of 79. He also added 14 yards on the ground.
» Oran Singleton (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston/Akron/Hutchinson CC), who began his collegiate career with the Zips, finished the game with 102 yards on 10 receptions. The most targeted player in the field in the game for both teams as no other player had more than four grabs, Singleton recorded his first 100-yard game as a collegiate player and made it two weeks in a row with an Eagle accomplishing the feat after both Markus Allen and Terry Lockett Jr. did so against Central Michigan, Oct. 19.
» James Djonkam (Springfield, Va./West Springfield/Independence CC/Arizona State) led the defense with 10 stops, marking the second time he has recorded double-digit tackles this season. He opened his EMU career with 13 tackles in the season-opener at Massachusetts for his career-high.
» The Eastern offense was shutout in one half of play for the first time this season and the first time since not scoring in the second half of the Eagles' 24-11 road win at Buffalo, Nov. 21, 2023. The last time the Eagles failed to score in the opening half came Sept. 23, 2023, in a 21-0 loss at Jacksonville State.

Historical Notes
» With the loss, the Eagles fell to 16-20-0 all-time against the Zips and saw their four-game winning streak snapped. The last time Akron bested Eastern was a 47-21 decision in Ypsilanti, Oct. 10, 2015. The Eagles also fell to 5-12-0 when playing at Akron all-time.

Up Next
Eastern returns to action at home next week when the University of Toledo Rockets come to Ypsilanti for a noon kick. The Eagles and Rockets will meet inside Rynearson Stadium live on ESPNU and have the contest broadcast live on WEMU (89.1 FM) the Varsity App with Tom Helmer, Rob Rubick, and Greg Steiner on the call.
