KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team will continue Mid-American Conference play on the road as it travels back to Ohio, this time to face the Golden Flashes of Kent State University Wednesday, Jan. 24, inside the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (M.A.C.) in Kent, Ohio.
ON AIR
Wednesday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with a 7 p.m. tip. where Normandie Berl and Dan Griffin will have the call. Fans can also listen to the game as Tom Helmer will have the call live on WEMU Radio (89.1 FM) and the Varsity Network App. Fans can also follow the action via live stats at EMUEagles.com/livestats. Additionally, the team's official Twitter account, @EMUWBB, will provide score updates throughout the contest.
BACK IN #MACTION
The Green and White's 2023-24 campaign marks the 43rd season Eastern Michigan will compete as a member of the Mid-American Conference. Playing a league schedule since the 1981-82 campaign, EMU has compiled a 307-405 record against conference opponents all-time.
NATIONALLY RANKED TAYRA
Tayra Eke's 2.3 blocks per game is good for first in the MAC and 19th nationally while her 37season blocks also leads the league and is ranked 27th in the nation.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR KENNEDI
Kennedi Myles recorded her 13th career double-double and the third in an Eastern jersey with her 16 points and 11 rebounds against Ohio, Jan. 20. The last time the graduate student earned double figure digits in both points and rebounds was when she posted the reverse 11 points and 16 rebounds against IUPUI, Dec. 15.
EXPERIENCED KENNEDI
Kennedi Myles' 16 points against the Bobcats, Jan. 20, marked the fifth contest this season with double-digit points and the 31st of her career. Additionally, Myles has posted 16 or more points in a single contest for the fourth time in her career. Her career-high stands at 23 against Merrimack College, Dec. 10, 2019 as a Fighting Illini.
WESTPHAL FROM THREE
Duquesne transfer, Olivia Westphal, went a perfect 3-for-3 from deep against the Bobcats, Jan. 20. It was just the third contest in which she has connected on three or more triples and the fourth of her career. Additionally, her 11 points tied her season-high at EMU and fell one short of her career-high 12 set against Brown University, Nov. 11, 2022, as a Duquesne Duke, marking just the third appearance with double-figure points.
DOUBLE-DIGIT SHOOTERS
EMU had three players score at least 10 points in the contest at Ohio, Jan. 20. The last time EMU had three or more player's score ten or more points in the same game was in the setback to Central Michigan University, Jan. 13. It marked just the third time this season marking the feat.
SHARP-SHOOTING SMITH
Sophomore Olivia Smith connected on three shots from beyond the arc in the loss to Ohio, going 3-for-8. It was the 12th contest this season in which Smith has made a single three-pointer. Last season, the then-rookie led the team in triples recording a single make in 25 total games. Her longest streak of consecutive games with a made triple was 13 (Dec. 17, 2022- Feb. 1, 2023).
SMITH FOR THREE
Sophomore Olivia Smith's three triples against Ohio, Jan. 20, marked the fourth contest of the season in which the sophomore has recorded three or more made threes and the 12th of her career. She currently leads the Eagles with 24 made triples on the season.
ROOKIE IN THE STARTING FIVE
Freshman Cali Denson was in the starting lineup for the 15th consecutive game after doing so for the first time in her career in the road game at Georgia Southern University, Nov. 11. Denson continues to be the only EMU freshman this season to be in the starting five.
FINDING TREASURE
Treasure Thompson found herself in the starting five for the first time this season and just the second in her career at EMU. The last time the junior started a game was at the University of Akron, Jan. 26, 2022.
STOP-EM THOMPSON
Treasure Thompson collected multiple blocks for the sixth time in her career with her two against the Bobcats, Jan. 20. Additionally, it was her third consecutive contest earning a single block.
THE BLOCKING BATTLE
EMU won the blocking-battle against Ohio, 5-0, Jan. 20. It was the seventh time this season the Eagles have out-blocked their opponent and the fourth consecutive. Last season, the team recorded more blocks than its foe in 19 contests.
FORCING TURNOVERS
The Eagles forced 20 Ohio turnovers in the setback, Jan. 20. It marked the fifth time this season in which EMU has forced 20 or more turnovers in a single game, the most being 25 against IUPUI, Dec. 15.
THE EAGLES FROM THREE
The loss marked the seventh time this season in which the EMU offense has produced six or more made triples in a single contest. The team's eight against the Bobcats tied their season high of eight at IUPUI, Dec. 15. Furthermore, it was the third-straight game in which the Eagles have made six or more three-pointers.
FROM THE BENCH
The Green and White earned 40 points from the bench at Ohio, Jan. 20, topping the team's previous career-high of 33 against Lindenwood University, Dec. 7. Both Kennedi Myles (16 points) and Olivia Smith (13 points) came off the bench for EMU producing a collective 47% of the team's offensive output.
BOARD GAMES
Eastern out-rebounded Ohio, 35-33, Jan. 20. It marked the eighth contest the Eagles have collected more boards than its opponent, going 5-3 in such games.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE GOLDEN FLASHES
The last time the two met, the Eagles had three players score in double figures in the 75-67 home loss, Feb. 25, 2023, led by Olivia Smith, who had 20 points. Tayra Eke tacked on 19 points and Ce'Nara Skanes chipped in as well with 10 points.
ALL-TIME VS. KENT STATE
Wednesday's matchup will mark the 74th meeting between Eastern and Kent State. KSU leads the all-time series, 45-28, with Kent State coming away with the last five games. The Eagles look to break a five-game losing streak to the Golden Flashes that started in the 2020-21 shortened season. However, EMU holds its second longest win streak against a MAC member with eleven straight against KSU from 2010-16.
THE MAC-SBC CHALLENGE
The MAC-SBC Challenge -- a scheduling alliance in the sports of men's and women's basketball -- has announced the matchups for the second leg scheduled for Feb. 10 or Feb. 11 with 12 MAC men's basketball programs traveling to 12 SBC)teams, while the 12 MAC women's basketball programs will host 12 SBC teams.
The women's team has been paired up with the University of South Alabama, based on real-time NET rankings, and will play host to the Jaguars Saturday, Feb. 10, inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center. It will mark the inaugural meeting between the two schools.
The EMU men's team will travel to the University of Louisiana at Monroe Saturday, Feb. 10, for a game held inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The teams have met once in program history, a narrow 71-67 loss for the Eagles in Monroe, March 18, 2015.
Both the EMU women and men played Georgia Southern University in the first leg of the MAC-SBC Challenge, Nov. 11. The women dropped a 82-58 decision while the men were victorious, 70-60.
ON THE HORIZON
Eastern will continue conference play as it readies to host the league-leading Cardinals of Ball State University, in the first part of an EMU basketball double-header with the men, Saturday, Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center. The men take on the Bulls of the University at Buffalo, at 3:30 p.m.
