Soccer Plays Mastodons to 2-2 Road Draw

Robinson assists on goals from Sipsock, O'Farrell in final non-conference road match

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) -- For the second time this year, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team fought back from a pair of one-goal deficits to earn a draw as the Eagles battled back to grab a 2-2 tie at Purdue University Fort Wayne, Thursday, Sept. 7. The Eagles (0-4-3) found themselves down 1-0 and 2-1 and tied things up twice to earn their third draw of the season, all by 2-2 scores.

How It Happened
Eastern came out on the front foot and came quite close to breaking the deadlock early as Cameryn Susey (Westerville, Ohio/Olentangy Berlin) rang the left post in the 6' on the first of her team-leading four shots in the game. Despite several strong efforts for Eastern, it was the Mastodons that broke into the scoring first as Morgan Reitano redirected a pass that came through the box and hit it into the underside of the top netting to make it 1-0 in the 17'. It didn't take the Eagles to pull that goal back, however, as Olivia Sipsock (Medina, Ohio/Medina) picked up her second of the season. On the play, Kate Robinson (Madison Heights, Mich./Lamphere) picked up the assist as she played the ball off at the top of the 18-yard box where Sipsock collected, touched the ball to the left, and deftly hit home past the keeper to make it 1-1.

After heading into halftime tied a 1-1, the Eagles looked to be on the front foot yet again, but, as it was in the first half, the Mastodons struck first. In the 59', Bella Reitano gave the Reitano Sisters a brace as she let a shot fly from distance that just snuck over the finger tips of EMU keeper Ella Holland (Dunwoody, Ga./Dunwoody/Samford) to make it 2-1. Although not as quickly as in the opening half, the Eagles struck back, this time in 72', to once again tie things up. On the play, EMU earned a corner kick with Robinson taking the kick. The freshman sent the ball swinging in toward the back post where Maddie O'Farrell (Haslett, Mich./Lansing Catholic) was waiting and drove the ball home with her head to make it 2-2 with her first goal of the season and the fourth assist of the year for Robinson. Eastern had several other strong chances, no more closer than in the final minute when a ball slipped through the PFW defense and came to Meagan Lukowski (Bay City, Mich./Bay City Western), who tried to tip the ball past the keeper, only to see it glance off a defender and roll just past the outside of the post.

Game Notes
» Eastern moved to 0-4-3 on the year with all three draws coming in 2-2 scores.
» The match saw the Eagles come back from two, one-goal deficits for the second time this year. The first came in identical fashion on the road at Dartmouth College, Aug. 25.
