Freshman Kaylee Synk netted 63rd-minute game-winner
TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team improved to 2-0 in Mid-American Conference play with a 1-0 victory at the University of Toledo Sunday, Sept. 21, at Paul Hotmer Field as freshman Kaylee Synk netted the game-winner in the 63rd minute.
Synk (North Olmstead, Ohio/St. Joseph's Academy) was assisted by juniors Olivia Sipsock (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and Cameryn Susey (Westerville, Ohio/Olentangy Berlin) while redshirt junior Ella Holland (Dunwoody, Ga./Dunwoody/Samford) made three saves en route to posting a second consecutive clean sheet.
Despite three MAC teams playing a trio of conference matches compared to EMU's two played, Eastern sits atop the MAC standings with six points earned as the Eagles are 2-0 in MAC play for the first time since 2014.
How It Happened
Eastern outshot Toledo, 4-2, in a first half that did not feature any corner kicks.
The Eagles' pressure increased in the second half, putting five shots on-frame in the period, which included Synk's right-footed strike from 15 yards out that snuck past the UT keeper and inside the left post at the 62:40 mark.
Eastern, which had an apparent goal waved off due to a handball minutes before Synk's goal, tallied two more shots on goal in the final 25 minutes.
The Rockets did not go down quietly, earning a corner kick with 18 seconds left in the match. The wild final sequence featured a loose ball near EMU's goal line and a save credited to Holland with just one second to go.
