ROCHESTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team will continue its non-conference slate as it readies for the Golden Grizzlies Invitational hosted by Oakland University Friday-Saturday, Sept. 8-9, inside the OU Credit Union O'rena in Rochester, Mich. The Green and White will take on the Golden Grizzlies once more after doing so last weekend in the Popcorn Classic. The two will meet Friday, Sept. 8, at noon before EMU takes on Chicago State University at 5 p.m. Saturday's match will see the Eagles face the University of Missouri-Kansas City Roos at noon. » The program's 48th season began with the announcing of a new coaching staff. Head coach Kevin Foeman joined the Eagles in March and added Lainey Stephenson as his assistant coach. Additionally, the program named Remy Foeman as the Director of Volleyball Operations.
» This season, the Eagles opened their nest to four "true" freshmen and five transfers to complete their "soar of eagles".
» Sept. 2, 2023 marked the day first-year head coach Kevin Foeman earned his first win as an Eastern Michigan Eagle as he and his team overcame Western Illinois University, 3-2 in the Popcorn Classic, for the first win of the 2023 season.

WEEKEND IN REVIEW: The Eagles earned their first victory of the season after they topped the Leathernecks of Western Illinois in a five-set thriller, Saturday, Sept. 2. Callie Minshew led the Eagles in kills in all three matches of the Popcorn Classic, Sept. 1-2, adding a career-high 20 kills in the win. Eastern Michigan displayed a better blocking performance than WIU, stopping a total of 13 opposing attacks to their four. A season-high 54 assists led the Green and White to top its previous team-high 53 set against Bradley University, Aug. 26. Additionally, EMU's offense contributed a season-high 58 kills in the victory, one more than it did against the Braves, Aug. 26.
FIRST OF MANY: Kevin Foeman earned his first victory as an EMU Eagle Saturday, Sept. 2, against Western Illinois. The team fought hard in a back-and-forth battle to ultimately take the win in the fifth set. The last time the team played in a fifth set and won was against the University of Akron, Oct. 29, 2022. Additionally, the win moves Foeman's career record as a head coach to 154-94 (62% winning percentage).
HAPPY 250TH, COACH: Kevin Foeman, the 10th head coach in EMU volleyball history, arrived to Ypsilanti with 242 matches coached during his time as a head coach with Ashland University and Lake Erie College. Already six matches into the 2023 season, Foeman prepares to hit his 250th career match when he and the rest of the EMU Eagles take on Chicago State, Friday, Sept. 8.
EMU IN THE POPCORN CLASSIC: The Green and White competed in the Popcorn Classic hosted by Valparaiso for the second time in program history. The first was during the 2005 season, when the Eagles went 2-1 in the tournament, defeating both Drake University, and Saint Louis University in three sets before falling to the Beacons in five. Moreover, the tournament marked the 32nd meeting with Oakland (25-7), the eighth with Valparaiso (4-4), and the sixth with Western Illinois (5-1) in program history.
DOUBLING THOSE DIGITS: Three different Eagles racked up double-digit kills throughout the Popcorn Classic. Along with Callie Minshew's three-day double-digit performances (11 vs. Oakland, 15 vs. Valparaiso, 20 vs. Western Illinois), Mackenzie Gross posted 11 against Oakland, while Angel Baylark collected 14 against WIU. One weekend prior, four different Eagles recorded double-digit figures in kills as Samantha Basham, Callie Minshew, Mackenzie Gross, and Abigail Stanford all accomplished the feat during the CEFCU Invitational, Aug. 25-26.
Moreover, four different Eagles recorded double-digit digs during the tournament in Bella Hommes (15 vs. Oakland, 23 vs. Valparaiso, 12 vs. WIU), Callie Minshew (11 vs. Valparaiso, 11 vs. WIU), Elle McLoughlin (13 vs. WIU), and Emma McMahon (22 vs. WIU).
ON THE SAME PAGE: Four Eagles registered double-digit digs in a single match as Callie Minshew posted 11, Bella Hommes put up 12, Elle McLoughlin earned 13, and Emma McMahon led with 22, all against WIU, Sept. 2. It was the first time this season in which four different members of the team recorded double-digit digs in a single match and the second time recording three with the feat. Hannah Howard (10), Emma McMahon (10), and Bella Hommes (22) each tallied double figures in digs against IUPUI, Aug. 25. The 24 total blocks was good for a season-high and ranks tied for third in the all-time team single match records book. The last time the Eagles recorded 24 total blocks in a single match was Oct. 3, 2003, when the Green and White put up 24 against Ball State University. The feat has been accomplished five times now in program history with 29 against Ferris State University, Sept. 13, 1983, holding the top spot.
Additionally, five different Eagles recorded multiple block performances against WIU with Angel Baylark's eight leading the team.
ACE-ACE-BABY: The Eagles defeated the Leathernecks in service aces as the Green and White recorded seven to the opposing five from WIU, Sept. 2. It marked the second time EMU has aced its opponent this season after doing so against SIUE, Aug. 25 with seven to the opposing four. Last season, the Green and White aced its opponent in nine meetings, holding a 5-4 record in such games.

HELPFUL (ELLE)LF: Elle McLoughlin was named to the Popcorn Classic All-Tournament Team after an impressive performance where she produced 46 assists and 13 digs for her first career double-double. The 13 digs topped her previous career-high seven set in two different occasions while her six blocks were good for a career-high after she posted five against IUPUI, Aug. 25. This was McLoughlin's fifth contest of the season in which she has helped on double-digit assists and her second 40+ assists match.
A BLOCKING ANGEL: Angel Baylark recorded multiple blocks in all three matches over the weekend for the second time this season. She stopped two Oakland attacks, three Valparaiso hits, and rejected the Leathernecks a season-high eight times. Her career high nine blocks was previously set against Tennessee Tech, Nov. 12, 2022.

OAKLAND: Friday's contest will mark the 33rd meeting between EMU and the Oakland Golden Grizzlies and the second of the 2023 season after falling to OU, 3-1, in the Popcorn Classic, Sept. 1. Despite the loss, the Eagles hold an impressive 25-7 record over Oakland dating back to their first meeting in 1977. After dropping the very first match, 2-1, Oct. 6, 1977, the Green and White went on what would have been a 22-game win streak from the year 1977 to 2008 if the Golden Grizzlies hadn't interrupted the streak in 2000 with a 3-0 sweep over the Eagles. EMU holds a 5-5 record in the last 10 matchups versus Oakland with the Golden Grizzlies coming away with the last three.
SWEEP CITY: The Eagles hold an impressive 25-7 record over Oakland dating back to their first meeting in 1977. In those 25 victories, the Eagles swept the Golden Grizzlies 22 times.
LAST TIME VERSUS THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES: The last time EMU faced Oakland was just last weekend when the Eagles fell in four sets in the Popcorn Classic, Friday, Sept. 1, in Valparaiso, Ind. Callie Minshew and Mackenzie Gross both led the Green and White with 11 kills each with Gross posting a .375 hitting percentage (11-of-24). Defensively, Bella Hommes led with 15 digs, while Elle McLoughlin contributed a team-leading four blocks.
ALL-TIME VS. CHICAGO STATE: Eastern and Chicago State will meet for the seventh time in their respective program histories Friday, Sept. 1, with EMU holding a 4-2 record over Chicago State. The two schools first played in Ypsilanti, Sept. 5, 1993, with the Eagles coming away with the win in a three-set sweep over the Cougars. EMU took control of the next three matches before Chicago State defeated the Green and White for the first time in 2017. The Cougars stretched their streak to two, coming away with the last meeting, a 3-0 sweep over the Eagles, Sept. 10, 2021.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE COUGARS: The last time the Eagles faced the Cougars was in the Flames Athletic Center at the UIC Invitational, hosted by the University of Illinois-Chicago, Sept. 10, 2021. Former Eagle Raeven Chase finished with 10 kills on the day to lead the Eagles offense while finishing with a hitting percentage of .421. EMU got seven digs from Bella Hommes to lead them defensively.
ALL-TIME VS. KANSAS CITY: EMU and Kansas City will meet for just the second time in program history. The series began with a 3-0 sweep over the Roos, Sept. 14, 1996 in a neutral meeting in Manhattan, Kan. As a member of the Summit League, Kansas City enters the tournament with a clean 6-0 record to start the 2023 season, taking a win off American Athletic Conference member Florida Atlantic University.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE ROOS: Saturday's contest will mark just the second contest between the two schools. The Green and White defeated the Roos in a three-set sweep in their first and last meeting, Sept. 14, 1996.
ON THE HORIZON: Following the Golden Grizzlies Invitational in Rochester, Mich., the team will take a trip to Chattanooga, Tenn. to partake in the Chattanooga Classic, the final non-conference tournament of the season, hosted by the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, Sept. 15-16. The Eagles are scheduled to face the tournament hosts, Friday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m. before meeting with Gardner-Webb University and Morehead State University Saturday, Sept. 16. Those matches are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively.

LAST TIME AGAINST THE ROOS: Saturday's contest will mark just the second contest between the two schools. The Green and White defeated the Roos in a three-set sweep in their first and last meeting, Sept. 14, 1996.
ON THE HORIZON: Following the Golden Grizzlies Invitational in Rochester, Mich., the team will take a trip to Chattanooga, Tenn. to partake in the Chattanooga Classic, the final non-conference tournament of the season, hosted by the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, Sept. 15-16. The Eagles are scheduled to face the tournament hosts, Friday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m. before meeting with Gardner-Webb University and Morehead State University Saturday, Sept. 16. Those matches are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively.
