INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)
– The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped its first game of the Butler Invitational on the road at IU Indy, 3-1, Thursday, Sept. 18, inside The Jungle.
 
Senior setter Ella Voorhees (Morgantown, W. Va./Morgantown/Southern Miss.) highlighted the EMU performances, posting the 10th double-double of her career and first of the season with 13 assists and 17 digs.
 
Junior outside hitter, Ava Siefke (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) led the team with 10 kills while Hatteras Welker (Sunbury, Ohio/Sunbury) and Surabhi Srinivasan (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) led the defense, posting five blocks and 17 digs, respectively.
 
Senior middle blocker Abby Stanford (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri Valley/Ashland) landed four kills to bring her career total to 500.
 
How it Happened
SET ONE | Strong serving helped the Eagles take the first set, 25-19. Eastern Michigan notched six aces in the set victory. The Eagles rallied from down six at 16-10 to grab the win and got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four IU Indy attacks in the stanza.

SET TWO | Eastern then dropped the second set, 26-24, evening things at one set each. The Eagles lost in a stanza that was tied 11 times and had four lead changes.

SET THREE | EMU fell again in set three to make it a 2-1 deficit. The Eagles lost the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before falling in the set, 25-11.

SET FOUR | Eastern Michigan lost the fourth set and the match, falling, 25-19, in the frame and 3-1 in the match. The Eagles trailed by as many as six points as IU Indy grabbed the advantage for good at 12-11.

Match Notes
» Eastern's record shifted to 7-4 (0-0 MAC) while IU Indy's improved to 5-5 (0-0 Horizon).
» Eastern had 10+ aces (11), marking the seventh time it has recorded 10 or more aces in the Head Coach Kevin Foeman era, producing a 4-3 record when doing so.
» Eastern lost for the first time this season when out-blocking its opponent as it had 11 to IU Indy's nine. The Eagles recorded 10+ blocks for the fifth time this season, equaling a 4-1 record in such contests.
» Voorhees recorded her first double-double of the season, notching 13 assists while leading the team with 17 digs.  The match marked her 10th with at least 10 digs in her career and her 31st with 10+ assists.
» Welker set a career high with four aces. Her four aces tie for the most on the team this season and third-most by value in the MAC, and sixth in the nation. She also led the team in blocks for the ninth time this season.
» AshleeKay Christensen (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) had a career-best 14 digs, the most from an Eastern freshman since Hannah Howard recorded 25 at the University of Toledo, Sept. 21, 2023.
» Srinivasan grabbed 17 digs, marking her career-best ninth 10+ dig game of the season.
» Ashlynn Belcher (Marengo, Ohio/Highland/Old Dominion) led the team in assists for the 11th time this season as she recorded 18.
» Siefke's 10 kills led the team, marking her eighth time doing so this season. The match continued her 10+ kills streak to 11 games, the most consistent stretch of her career.
 
Historical Notes
»  The game marked the seventh between the Eagles and Jaguars.  EMU holds a 4-3 record in the series with all four wins coming in Indianapolis, where it compiles a 4-1 record against IU Indy.
» Stanford reached the 500-kill mark with her four. She is the second Eagle to reach the milestone this season as Siefke did so in a win over Southern Illinois University, Sept. 13.
» Belcher needs six more digs to reach 500 in her career.
