EMU set to host three home regattas in upcoming season
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University Rowing Head Coach Kemp Savage announced the team's 2023-24 schedule today, Aug. 23. A member of the recently renamed Coastal Athletic Association (CAA), Eastern Michigan is set to host three home regattas in the upcoming season including the Ford Lake Shore Race with both Adrian College and the University of Dayton.
""We have put together a schedule that is going to get the team good competition to build our speed for CAAs as well as giving our home fans more opportunities to see their Eagles at home on Ford Lake," said Savage.
Eastern will start its season with two road scrimmages, opening the year once more with a contest against the University of Michigan, Sept. 10, at Belleville Lake. Next, the Green and White will head to East Lansing, Mich. to take on the Spartans of Michigan State University in a friendly scrimmage, Oct. 14, on Lake Ovid.
The Eagles will compete in their first official race of the season, Oct. 21, as the team travels to Boston, Mass. to participate in the noted Head of the Charles regatta for the third straight season. Last year, the Eagles' Women's Club Eight squad finished 17th out of 40 boats with a time of 17:16.227 - more than 10 seconds faster than the year prior (17:27.616 in 2021).
Eastern will finish up the fall schedule at home, Oct. 28, in the Ford Lake Shore Race. This is the second time the Eagles have scheduled a fall event at home on Ford Lake since 2009 after doing so last season. Unfortunately, the event was canceled last year due to severe weather. This year's race will include the Eagles, Adrian, and Dayton competing on Ford Lake.
In the new year, EMU ventures to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to duel with the University of Alabama on the Black Warrior River, March 1, before heading to the East Coast to compete for the Knecht Cup, a two-day regatta on Cooper River in Cherry Hill N.J. This year, the event will take place, April 13-14.
The Eagles will finish their travel season with a regatta at the George Mason Invitational hosted in Sandy Run Regional Park in Fairfax, Va., April 21.
Eastern concludes the regular season with two home competitions first against Dayton, April 28, and will finish with Robert Morris University, May 3, both at Ford Lake.
This season, the CAA Championships will take place May 19, in Pennasauken, N.J. Starting effective in the beginning of the 2023-24 academic school year, the formerly known Colonial Athletic Association will now be named the Coastal Athletic Association.
