Junior college transfer set to join the Eagles for the upcoming season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball program has added Julius Ellerbe (Fort Washington, Md./VA Beach Sports Academy/East Central (Miss.) CC) to the 2023-24 roster, Head Coach Stan Heath announced today, Aug. 10. The 6-foot-7 Ellerbe comes to Ypsilanti with two years of eligibility after finishing the 2022-23 season at East Central Community College in Decatur, Miss.

"I am excited to bring Julius on board," Heath said. "He gives us experience at the wing position, is very versatile, and handles the ball very well. He also is a good defender with toughness and we are hopeful he can come in and be an impact player for us."

Ellerbe did it all in his one season with the Warriors, as he posted three triple-doubles and added seven double-doubles in his 21 games played. Averaging 13.9 points, 10.6 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 2.0 steals, Ellerbe opened last season with back-to-back triple-doubles, going for 10 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in the opener with Wallace-Selma before bettering those numbers against William Carey College with 13 points, 16 boards, and 10 dimes. He also scored in double figures in 17-of-21 games, including back-to-back games scoring 23+, while pulling down at least 10 rebounds in 12 games, five of which saw him swipe 17.

He began his college career at Baton Rouge Community College in Baton Rouge, La., where he spent two seasons with the Bears. The 2020-21 season saw him appear in 15 games and starting six, including the final five games he played. He finished the season averaging 7.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, and posted double-doubles in his final three games, including a 20-point, 15-rebound performance against Copiah-Lincoln. He was limited to just two games in the 2021-22 season before he transferred.

A native of Fort Washington, Md., Ellerbe graduated from VA Beach Sports Academy where he was a two-sport student-athlete, playing both basketball and football. On the hardwood, he was a four-time captain and averaged 20.0 points per game his senior season.
