Track and field captain Kyle Martin organizes second “School of Green” event

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Track and Field captain and Honors undergraduate student-athlete, Kyle Martin (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron) will play host to the second "School of Green" event at the Ann Arbor Senior Center, Tuesday, Aug. 22. Organized as a part of a series of interactive community engagement programs, Martin created these "School of Green" events to encourage environmental stewardship within the Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, & Southwest Detroit area. This year, the event will be jointly hosted by Michigan Sea Grant, Detroit Zoological Society, and the Sierra Club Huron Valley Group.

A two-year captain of the track and field team and a standout in the classroom, Martin is hosting the event for the second consecutive year and, each year, there is a different animal theme. This past year, there was a particular focus on reptiles and amphibians, with this upcoming year, with the focus this year placed on mammals.

The "School of Green" event is a community service, educational learning, park clean-up, and networking event all wrapped in one with the primary goal of educating local communities about the various creatures in their neighborhoods. The event features live animal demonstrations, hands-on activities, and arts and crafts, as well as civic engagement led by numerous programs and organizations from around the state of Michigan. There are no fees or costs to attend the event. Attendees will meet in the Ann Arbor Senior Center which will have signs directing attendees to the desired entrance of the building.

The day will begin with a brief introduction of the event, followed by a hands-on indoor activity featuring the Huron-Clinton Metroparks Center, then a short presentation about protecting local mammals within our communities and lastly finishing with a nature walk/park clean-up.

There will be free food (such as doughnuts, cookies, bananas, oranges, etc.) and light refreshments provided, as well as the ability to earn volunteer hours and/or Learning Beyond the Classroom Group 3 credit. In order to attend the event, earn community service/LBC credit, and receive the specific details on where to meet within Burns Park, participants must RSVP by filling out the Form HERE
