The Eagles enter the programs 48th season
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Head Volleyball Coach Kevin Foeman announced the team's 2023 season schedule today, July 25. The slate includes 30 regular season matches with four non-conference tournaments to start.
"The team is excited for this upcoming season," said Foeman. "We have a good mix of non-conference matches that allow us to mesh and gear up for the always tough MAC schedule. With the high level of play and expectations set within this conference, we are ready to embrace the opportunities ahead of us and looking forward to competing each week."
Prior to their first regular season match, the Eagles will begin their 48th season with a scrimmage amongst themselves, Friday, Aug. 18, before hosting Hillsdale College for an official exhibition, Saturday, Aug. 19. The match is set to be played in the George Gervin GameAbove Center starting at 1 p.m.
EMU's 12 non-conference matches will come against opponents from seven different leagues, including three from the Ohio Valley Conference, three from the Horizon League, and two from the Missouri Valley Conference. During these 12 road games, the Eagles will partake in the CEFCU Invitational hosted by Bradley University, Aug. 25-26, the Popcorn Classic hosted by Valparaiso University, Sept. 1-2, the Golden Grizzlies Invitational hosted by Oakland University, Sept. 8-9, and lastly, the Chattanooga Classic hosted by Chattanooga, Sept. 15-16.
Kicking off their journey to a competitive conference season under the first-year head coach Foeman, the Eagles are set to visit the University of Toledo in the Glass City Thursday, Sept. 21 for a 6 p.m. meeting and then again Friday, Sept. 22. Nine of the 18 Mid-American Conference matches will be played in the George Gervin GameAbove Center starting with a midweek match against in-state rival Central Michigan University Tuesday, Sept. 26. The Eagles will continue their home stand with a pair of meetings against the Cardinals of Ball State University, Sept. 29-30, before hitting the road to Akron, Ohio to face the Zips Thursday, Oct. 5. From there, the team will make its way to Buffalo, N.Y., for an evening meeting with the University at Buffalo, Oct. 6, to finish out the week.
The following weekend will entail two road games in DeKalb, Ill., as the squad will take on the Huskies of Northern Illinois University, Oct. 12-13 before hosting four back-to-back matches. Two of the four are set to be against Western Michigan University, Oct. 20-21, while the other two will come against Bowling Green State University, Oct. 26, and Miami University, Oct. 27.
The month of November will see the Eagles soar over to Athens, Ohio, for a set of matches against Ohio University, Nov. 3-4, and the teams last home stand as it hosts the Golden Flashes of Kent State University, Nov. 10-11. The 2023 regular season will come to an end after the Eagles take on the Chippewas one last time, this time on the road in Mount Pleasant, Mich., Wednesday, Nov. 15.
The Mid-American Conference Tournament is set to begin Sunday, Nov.19 and will run through Wednesday, Nov. 22. At the conclusion of regular-season play, the top six teams in the MAC standings will earn nods into the MAC Tournament, with the highest seed gaining home court advantage. The start of the tournament will see the bottom four duke it out for a chance at the top two-seeded. In instances where two teams are tied for a top-six position, the team with a better overall record would win the tie. Furthermore, in cases where the two institutions are also knotted in overall records, the team who performed best against the higher seeded teams within the regular season will get the upper hand.
Home volleyball matches are free to not only students and staff, but also to the general public. To stay up to date with Eastern Michigan volleyball, continue to check out EMUEagles.com or follow the team on Twitter (@EMUVolleyball) and Instagram (@emu_volleyball).
