Trevor Beerman and Craig Prince named assistant coaches
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Head Baseball Coach Robbie Britt announced the first two additions to his coaching staff today, July 18, with the hiring of Trevor Beerman and Craig Prince as assistant coaches for the 2024 season. Beerman will serve as recruiting coordinator and will assist with the offense, while Prince will help mentor EMU's pitchers.
"I'm so excited to welcome Trevor and Craig to our program," said Britt. "I've been fortunate to work closely with each of them for a number of years, and have seen their incredible spirit for others. Both Coach Beerman and Coach Prince will bring a positive energy to our environment that is genuine, student-athlete centered, and a work ethic that is relentless. I'm confident that they will leave this place better than they found it."
The pair have worked extensively in the Great Lakes Region with progressive coaching experience at the NCAA Division I, II, and III levels. Furthermore, Beerman and Prince have a previous working relationship at Bluffton University.
Beerman arrives in Ypsilanti after serving as the recruiting coordinator and hitting coach at Chatham University (Pa.). While at Chatham, Beerman played a large role in breaking the total wins record in consecutive seasons in 2022 and 2023, as well as shattering the total records for hits, doubles, triples, home runs, RBIs, and walks. Beerman was pivotal in the development of Benny Dottle, paving the way for him to become an all-conference shortstop, making him the inaugural first team all-conference player in program history.
Beerman also had a stint with Britt at the University of Charleston (W.Va.), as the Golden Eagles' assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from January 2021-November 2021. Beerman served as the outfield coach and third base coach in his time at Charleston, and proved to be invaluable in the development of outfielders Hayden Cartt and Colby Johnson, as the two were named Mountain East Conference (MEC) All-Conference First Team members in the 2021 season.
Before Charleston, Beerman was the assistant baseball coach at Hillsdale College where he worked with both the infield and outfield. Beerman worked closely with player development while at Hillsdale and took the lead on its recruiting initiatives in the Ohio territory.
In his first collegiate baseball position, Beerman was the assistant baseball coach at Bluffton University, where he coached all position players, and served as the primary hitting coach. Beerman assisted the head coach in all day-to-day operations, including recruiting, scouting, player development, and game day operations. He also aided in the growth of Parker Reynolds, as he developed into an all-conference catcher for the Beavers.
In his playing days, Beerman was a right-handed pitcher for Division II Malone University. In his senior season, Beerman took the mound 12 times, allowing runs in just four of those appearances. Beerman was a large part of the Pioneers' two Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Tournament teams, finishing runner-ups both times.
As a student-athlete at Malone, Beerman also coached a multitude of summer travel teams, including the Columbus Storm and Midwest Marlins.
A native of Canal Winchester, Ohio, Beerman graduated from Canal Winchester High School in 2014, where he was an all-conference baseball player, before earning a bachelor's degree in business from Malone in 2018, and an MBA in Leadership from Bluffton in 2020.
"I'm excited to get to work at Eastern Michigan University," Beerman added. "Coach Britt is a guy I have a lot of respect for and I'm excited for the opportunity to work with him again."
Prince most recently served as the recruiting coordinator and pitching coach for the University of Akron. Prince was monumental in restoring the Zips' program in 2023, as he played a large role in securing UA's winningest season (21 wins) since the program resumed competition in 2020.
Prince helped Akron's pitching staff shave 1.63 runs per game off its ERA from the 2022 campaign. Additionally, Sammy Tortorella led the Mid-American Conference with a pair of complete games, while he ranked 13th nationally in games started with 17.
Before his stint with the Zips, Prince coached at Adrian College, again as a pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. In his inaugural season with Adrian he helped the Bulldogs reach the Division III World Series as well as sending a pair of pitchers to the next level.
Left-handed pitcher Mo Hanley was taken in the 13th round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels, and right-handed hurler Pierce Banks, a Second Team All-American and Player of the Year in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) that season, was signed by the Minnesota Twins in 2022.
Prince also served primarily as a pitching coach at Bluffton University from 2018-20, where he developed throwing programs and made meal plans for the student-athletes to follow. In his time at Bluffton, Prince coached Dante D'Andrea to second team all-conference selection, along with being named a preseason honorable mention All-American.
A native of Newark, Ohio, Prince is a 2018 graduate of Otterbein University, where he majored in business and was a three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) pitcher for the baseball team. He then went on to earn a MBA in Leadership from Bluffton in 2020.
"I'm extremely excited to be joining a program with a deep history and a strong foundation," Prince added. "The support from the entire athletic department and community is obvious. I'm extremely excited to begin working with our student-athletes."
Eastern Michigan finished the 2023 campaign with a 27-26 overall record, marking the program's first winning season since the 2011 squad went 37-22 with a 16-11 conference record. Furthermore, EMU pitching totaled 451 punch outs, vaulting the squad into first place all-time in single-season strikeouts as a team in EMU baseball history. The second place team in the category is the 2022 squad, which struck out 416 batters that season, 35 less than the 2023 staff.
