Graduate sprinter garnered highest academic award following success in the classroom, on the track

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School), a member of the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field program, has been named a member of the 2023 Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Collegiate Sports Communicators Academic All-America Third Team, the association announced today, June 28. The honor is the highest academic all-America accolade student-athletes can attain each year.

Selected to the 2023 Mid-American Conference's Academic All-MAC Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field teams this year, Edwards carried a 4.00 grade-point average in her graduate studies in molecular and cellular biology. She is the only member of the MAC to earn CSC Academic All-America honors in women's track & field/cross country this year.

Athletically, Edwards played a role the women's team success at the conference level in 2023 as the Eagles captured the 2023 MAC Indoor Track & Field Championship before taking runner-up honors (by three points) at the 2023 MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Individually, Edwards tallied nine points for Eastern at the indoor meet as she raced to a second-place finish in the 400m dash before placing eighth in the 200m. On the outdoor oval, she placed eighth in the 200m while running the second leg on the 4x400m relay team that captured gold and the third-place 4x100m relay.

Historically, Edwards is the 30th different Eastern student-athlete and 13th woman to earn Academic All-America accolades from CSC. The sixth different track & field/cross country runner to earn the honor and the third woman, Edwards is the first track & field/cross country recipient from Eastern since 2018 when Janina Pollatz and Jordann McDermitt were named second and third-team, respectively, and is the first Eastern student-athlete to be recognized since 2021 when Mike Monahan (baseball) and Mike Van Hoeven (football) were honored. All told, Edwards garnered the 14th third-team accolade in Eastern history and the 35th award overall.
