Martynov (Canada) & Osojnik (Slovenia) will represent their countries in Hungary, June 24-July 2
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Two of the newest members of the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball program have been selected to represent their home countries at the FIBA U19 World Cup in Debrecen, Hungary. Cyril Martynov (Barrie, Ontario-Lawrenceville (N.J.)-Georgia Tech) will represent Canada while Arne Osojnik (Ljubljana, Slovenia-Dream City Christian (Ariz.)) will play for Slovenia at the event that runs June 24-July 2 with all games being streamed live on YouTube.com/FIBA.
Martynov, who transferred into the Eastern program from Georgia Tech, and Team Canada have been drawn into a very tough Group A as the seventh-ranked Canadians will join No. 2 Spain, No. 3 France, and No. 27 China in pool play. Action gets underway for Canada Saturday, June 24, against Spain with games against China (June 25) and France (June 27) to follow. All three games will be played inside Fonix Arena in Debrecen. Canada has had tremendous success at previous FIBA U19 World Cups, including winning the title in 2017 and taking third in 2021.
Osojnik, a recent high school graduate from Dream City Christian in Arizona, and Team Slovenia were drawn into Group B. Slovenia is ranked No. 10 in the FIBA rankings and are joined in the group by No. 1 USA, No. 35 Madagascar, and No. 39 Lebanon. Slovenia opens the tournament Saturday, June 24, against Lebanon inside the Olah Gabor Arena before facing the USA (June 25, Fonix Arena) and Madagascar (June 27, Olah Gabor Arena). Slovenia has yet to medal in the international competition with its lone top 8 showing coming in 2003.
Being drawn into the first two groups, there is a chance the two newest Eagles could meet in the Round of 16 games that will be played June 28 as the winners in Group A and Group B will face the fourth-place teams in the opposite group while the second and third-place teams will meet as well (A1 vs. B4, A2 vs. B3, etc.). A full schedule for the tournament can be found below.
The remaining two groups consist of No. 6 Serbia, No. 12 Brazil, No. 16 Egypt and No. 31 Japan forming Group C with No. 8 Turkey, No. 18 Argentina, No. 29 Korea, and host No. 62 Hungary comprising Group D.
