YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) --
The Eastern Michigan University Eagles took a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning, but could not hang on and fell 6-4 to the Miami University RedHawks Friday, April 7 on Oestrike Stadium.

Senior Tyler Helgeson (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) (1-2) came out of the bullpen for Eastern Michigan (12-14,) and took the loss. Junior Jagger Jefferies (Barnesville, Ohio-Barnesville-Bryant&Stratton C.C.) was a bright spot for the Eagles, coming out of the bullpen as well and throwing 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing no hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.

In the batter's box, the Eagles were paced by junior Cory Taylor (Shelbyville, Ind.-Shelbyville), who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double, a triple and two RBIs. Sophomore Josh Kross (Brunswick, Ohio-Brunswick) compiled a standout performance as well, going 3-for-5. Senior Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller) also chipped in for Eastern Michigan, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

How it Happened
The Eagles were trailing 3-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Eastern Michigan scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Taylor.

The game remained tied until the very next inning, when the Eagles got going again on offense. Sophomore Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich.-Essexville Garber) came across to score the lone run of the inning for Eastern Michigan, which brought the Eagles lead to 4-3. The Green and White were unable to hold the lead, as Miami scored three times over the remaining five innings to grab the 6-4 win.

Game Notes
» Eastern Michigan saw some offense in the bottom of the third inning on a big swing from Taylor that scored two runs for the Eagles. It is the fourth time the right-handed hitting infielder has recorded multiple RBIs in a game this season. The Shelbyville, Ind. native added a triple in the bottom of the seventh inning, which marks the second triple of the junior's career, and the fourth time an Eagle has tripled this season. Additionally, Taylor's performance Friday afternoon marks the second time this season an EMU batter has recorded both a double and a triple in the same game as Matt Kirk (Milford, Ohio.-Milford) accomplished the feat in a 11-10 win over Towson, March 3.
» Kross recorded three hits and a run scored in Friday afternoon's contest against the RedHawks. This marks a team-high 14th multi-hit game for the first baseman in the 2023 season, and the fifth three-hit performance, tying Kirk for most on the team.
» Hopkins went 2-for-4 from the plate for Eastern Michigan and recorded an RBI as well. It is the 14th different game this season in which Hopkins has recorded an RBI, and marks the 26 driven in on the 2023 season for the shortstop.
»Thomas House (Ross, Ohio.-Ross) got the ball for Eastern, and pitched six innings for the Eagles. He allowed three earned runs and struck out five batters for the game. It is just the second time the right-hander has gone at least six innings, tying a season-high as well. He also went six innings in a home loss against Ball State, March 24. In addition, House also threw 120 pitches, a career high in his five seasons wearing an Eastern Michigan uniform.
»With a single in the bottom of the third inning, Kirk extended his streak of reaching base safely to 11 consecutive games in the loss to Miami. His streak is the longest current streak on the team by five games and the longest of his collegiate career.

 Historical Notes
» Today was the 50th meeting between Eastern Michigan and Miami since 1999. After today's result, the Eagles trail the all-time series, 34-16.
