Seven-foot center brings size to Ypsilanti after one season at Georgia Tech

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Cyril Martynov (Barrie, Ontario-Lawrenceville (N.J.)-Georgia Tech), a 7-foot center, has transferred into the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball program and has been added to the 2023-24 roster, Head Coach Stan Heath announced today, April 26. Martynov will have three years of eligibility for the Eagles.

"We are excited to have Cyril," Heath said of the newest Eagle. "He gained a year of experience at Georgia Tech and he is someone we followed in high school from Canada. One of things we needed to address is having more size, a presence inside, and more rebounding and he is someone that can do those things. He will give us more scoring, but also will give us more rebounds. We are excited he is joining our program and we have no doubt he is going to be an impact player. He already has a nice feel for the game, he gets along very well with his new teammates here, and I think the future is so bright with Cyril."

Martynov (pronounced "kuh-REEL MAR-tin-off"), who reclassified to the 2022 class, was a highly sought big man that received offers from Missouri, Northwestern, and Wisconsin before signing with Georgia Tech. A three-star prospect by both On3 and 247Sports, he spent the 2022-23 season with the Yellow Jackets where he saw limited action in seven games. He finished the year with five points and six rebounds in 18 minutes of playing time. He scored a season-best two points against both North Alabama and Alabama State and recorded a season-high two rebounds in games with Northeastern and ASU.

Martynov was a three-year starter at Innisdale Secondary School in Barrie, Ontario, and earned his degree following his junior season. From there, he attended the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J., and played for the highly acclaimed academic institution during the 2021-22 season, earning selection to the school's Dean's list twice.

On the club level, Martynov was a member of the UPlay Canada team that competed on the Nike EYBL circuit during the summer of 2022. During that time, he nearly averaged a double-double as he scored 14.0 points and 9.4 rebounds. In a five-game span, she scored in double digits and tallied a personal tournament-best 27 points against Vegas Elite while also grabbing 18 rebounds. In the final weekend of the circuit at the event in Kansas City, he posted averages of 17.2 points and 10.4 rebounds to lead the way for his team.
