ROCHESTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Senior Aaron Dolney (Plymouth, Mich.-Detroit Country Day-Nebraska-Hillsborough C.C.) put together a brilliant showing at the plate Wednesday, hitting two homers, but the Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell to the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies 9-7.
Junior Jagger Jefferies (Barnesville, Ohio-Barnesville-Bryant & Startton C.C.) (1-1) got the ball to start for Eastern Michigan (16-19, 6-12 MAC) and took the loss. Senior Trevor House (Okeana, Ohio-Ross) was a bright spot for the Eagles, coming out of the bullpen and throwing one shutout inning, allowing no hits, with one walk and one strikeout.
Dolney went 3-for-4 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with four RBIs. Graduate Student Kyle Schroedle (Redding, Calif.-University Prep-Crown College) added to Dolney's awesome power-hitting performance by going 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI along with one walk. Senior Glenn Miller (Pentwater, Mich.-Pentwater-Spring Arbor) also helped out for the Eagles, going 1-for-5 with a double.
How it Happened
The Eagles got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Eastern Michigan plated two runs when Dolney left the yard with junior Darren Kraft (Mount Pleasant, S.C.-Oceanside Collegiate Academy) aboard.
The Eagles then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the third inning after the Golden Grizzlies cut it to 2-1. Miller came across to score the lone run of the inning for Eastern Michigan, which brought the score to 3-1 in favor of the Eagles.
Eastern Michigan's lead had disappeared by the time the seventh inning arrived and turned into a 7-3 Oakland advantage, when the Eagles cut that deficit to 7-5. The Eagles notched two runs off of Oakland pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double from Schroedle.
The Golden Grizzlies expanded their lead to 9-5 before the Eastern Michigan offense got back in action, digging into that lead in the ninth. The Eagles scored twice on Dolney's two-run homer, bringing the score to 9-7 in favor of Oakland. The ballgame ended with that ninth inning rally falling short.
