Re-Watch the Game.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team mustered 10 runs of offense, but could not outpace its competition from the University of Akron, as the Zips defeated the Eagles, 14-10, inside Oestrike Stadium today, April 18. The midweek matchup between league foes does not count towards conference records.

Eastern Michigan (16-18, 6-12 MAC) notched its 20th game of the season with 10+ hits, but could not outlast Akron (14-22, 6-12 MAC), which picked up its second win over the Eagles this season. All told, EMU finishes the regular season with a 3-2 tally against the Zips.

How it Happened
Down 3-0 after the top half of the first inning, Eastern Michigan got on the board via a solo home from by Josh Kross (Brunswick, Ohio.-Brunswick). Eastern added one more in the bottom half of the second, but went scoreless until the fourth following its initial two runs.

Akron went down quick in the top half of the second inning, but added three more in the top of the third to go ahead, 6-2.

Eastern's most explosive inning came in the bottom of the fourth, when the Eagles tallied four runs. The inning started with back-to-back hits from Cory Taylor (Shelbyville, Ind.-Shelbyville) and Ryan Lux (Shelby Twp., Mich.-Stevenson). With two on, it was Cole Wilcox (Shiocton, Wisc.-Shiocton-Lake County) that delivered a bunt single to load the bases. Then, two walks from Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich.-Essexville Garber) and Glenn Miller (Pentwater, Mich.-Pentwater-Spring Arbor), followed by a fielder's choice, then a single by Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller), brought the four runs home for the Eagles.
Eastern added four more runs over its final five trips to the plate, but it was not enough to keep pace with Akron, which scored two in the sixth and one in the ninth to secure its 14-10 victory.

Game Notes
» Kross sent a solo shot to right field in the top of the first inning for his team-leading 10th home run of the season. The Brunswick, Ohio native has picked up his slugging as of late, with five long balls in his last six games. What's more, Kross became the first Eagle to reach double digit home runs on the 2023 season. The first baseman finished the day 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs, marking his eighth game this season with three or more driven in.
» Hugo doubled in the bottom of the second to score Ryan Lux. The double goes down as Hugo's third of the 2023 season, and his fifth extra-base-hit in his previous six games. The Essexville, Mich. native also has nine RBIs in just as many games.
» Catcher Ryan Lux (Shelby Twp., Mich.-Stevenson) had an impressive game as well, recording two hits to help the Eagle offense. The two hits are just the second time that he has recorded a multi-hit game in his Eastern Michigan career, both coming this season.
» Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller) went 2-for-5 in the loss against the zips. The shortstop now has 13 multi-hit games this season, Last season, Hopkins 16 multi-hit games.
» Eastern Michigan scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning against Akron in today's contest. It marked the 20th time this season the Eagles have scored four or more runs in a single frame, and the second in as many games. Last season, Eastern Michigan hit that total just 21 times in 56 games.
» Senior Glenn Miller (Pentwater, Mich.-Pentwater) went 1-for-3 with an RBI double and had a walk as well. It is the fourth game this season in which the Pentwater native has at least a double and a walk, including his second consecutive game.
» As a team, Eastern Michigan had a total of six walks in the game. It is the 13th time this season in which they have had at least five walks in a game, doing so in twelve other occasions.
» Eastern Michigan scored 10 runs in the loss against the zips. It marked the eighth time this season that Eastern has scored 10 or more runs in a contest. The Green and White have a record of 7-1 when scoring double digit runs.

Historical Notes
» Kross' solo home run in the bottom of the first inning was Eastern Michigan's 50th home run of the 2023 season. After leading the Mid-American Conference in home runs a season ago (81), the Eagles have hit 50+ home runs in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2009-10, respectively. EMU hit 100 home runs in 2009 before following it up with an even 50 in 2010. The 100 single-season home runs for the 2009 club stand as a program record.
» Eastern Michigan has now hit 50 home runs on the season as a team. The Eagles are averaging 1.5 home runs per game in the 2023 season. If EMU can keep that pace over its final 20 contests, it would finish with 80 home runs in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.
» Eastern Michigan recorded 12 hits in the effort against the Zips. They have also recorded 10 or more hits in seven consecutive games, a streak that began April 9th against Miami. It is the first time they have had 7-straight games with at least 10 or more hits since they did the same from April 24-May 3, 2011, against Western Michigan, Michigan State, Ball State and Louisville.
