The team won 4-3 behind four impressive singles outings

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team picked up a big Mid-American Conference win, 4-3, over Western Michigan University today, March 31, in Kalamazoo. The win over its in-state rival comes just one week after the Broncos bested EMU, 5-2, in Ypsilanti.

With the victory, Eastern Michigan (5-4, 2-2 MAC) moves back above the .500 mark for the season and improves its MAC ledger to an even 2-2. Additionally, it goes down as EMU's first MAC road victory of the season, and second overall.

How it Happened
Eastern Michigan picked up the four points it needed to secure the win in singles. After picking up just two points in the singles lineups the first time around against the Broncos, March 24, EMU had an incredible bounce-back effort today.

The fastest match of the day came at No. 4 singles, where Daniella Shved (Holon, Isreal-ORT Holon) cruised to a 6-1, 6-3, straight-set victory. She also defeated WMU's No. 4 singles player in the first meeting between the two teams.

After dropping the first set, 6-3, Wanyi Zhang  (Bejing, China-Crnjanski Gimnzija (Serbia))showed incredible resilience at the No. 3 spot. She picked up a 6-2 win in the second set before dominating, 6-1, in the third to close out EMU's second singles win of the afternoon.

Not to be outdone, Linda Eloundou Nga (Yaounde, Cameroon-Augustine Meyou-New Mexico Military Institute)  also rallied to pick up a big win. Despite dropping the first set, 6-4, she was able to rally to win in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-4), and give EMU its third victory of the day.

With the match on the line, it was the effort of Andrea Quiroz (Lima, Peru-La Molina 1278-Alcorn State) in the No. 1 singles position that lifted Eastern over its in-state foe. Quiroz struggled out of the gate, dropping the first set, 6-0, but battled back to win the second, 7-5. A made-for-TV third set saw the first-year Eagle knotted at five games apiece before ripping off two straight games and winning, 7-5. All told, she took home a 0-6, 7-5, 7-5 win to seal the deal for Eastern Michigan.

Match Notes
» Quiroz had an incredible turnaround in today's match. In her first meeting against WMU, March 24, she won just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 defeat. Quiroz has now won consecutive matches for the first time this season after defeating Bowling Green, March 26.
» Shved continues to dominate in singles play this season. Her win, the third in a row for the Israel native, moves her to 7-1 on the season. That number leads all EMU players.
» With her win today, Zhang has now won back-to-back matches. Additionally, she is above .500 in singles play for the first time (4-3) this season. Her four singles wins are the fourth most on the team this season.
