Second consecutive regional appearance on beam for the sophomore

NCAA RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) -
The NCAA Gymnastics Selection Show announced today, March 20, that Eastern Michigan University sophomore gymnast Ella Chemotti (Canton, Mich.-Canton) earned an individual bid to the NCAA Pittsburgh Regional Championships. The regional will be hosted by the University of Pittsburgh and held in Pittsburgh, Pa. at the Petersen Event Center, March 30-April 1. Chemotti will compete on Friday, March 31, at 7 p.m.

Qualification for national competition is based on the individual competitor's six best regular-season meet scores, of which three must be away. To obtain the national qualifying score (NQS), the high score is eliminated and the remaining five scores are averaged. In previous years, this was known as the Regional Qualifying Score (RQS), which was changed for the 2019 season to reflect the new postseason format.

The top two teams from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships. In addition, the top all-around competitor and top event specialist from round two at each regional (who is not on a team advancing to nationals) will advance to the national championships. Event specialist qualifiers will only compete in the events they qualified.

With an NQS of 9.895, Chemotti finished the 2023 campaign atop the Mid-American Conference beam rankings. The sophomore owned the conference's beam title for seven of the season's ten weeks.

Chemotti posted five beam scores of 9.900 better in 2023, including her season-high of 9.925 performance at the Iowa State Triangular, Jan. 20. Her impressive 9.900, first-place effort in the team's regular season finale against Bowling Green, March 12, earned Chemotti her seventh top beam finish of the season. The Michigan native recorded first place finishes on beam against Arizona State, Jan. 13, Iowa State, Jan. 20, Ball State, Jan. 22, West Virginia, Jan. 29, Northern Illinois, Feb. 17, and Kent State, Feb. 26.

On March 22, 2022, Chemotti earned an individual bid to the NCAA Norman Regional Championships on beam. The then freshman shined bright, bringing back her triple series with ease and earning 9.900, tying for second place. Chemotti was the first EMU freshman to compete individually at NCAA Regionals since former Eagle Kaylyn Millick qualified in all-around in 2010.
