Newlyn Stephenson Takes Home Two MAC Weekly Awards

The Gary, Ind. native won MAC Scholar Athlete and Field Athlete of the Week, Feb. 1
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University track and field student-athlete Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) brought home a pair of league-wide weekly awards, the Mid-American Conference announced today, Feb. 1. Stephenson was named the MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week, and the MAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week after his impressive performance in the weight throw at the UNM Team Open, hosted by the University of New Mexico, Jan. 27.
Stephenson was not only the best in the Mid-American Conference, but was quite literally the best in the nation last week. He won the weight throw at the UNM Team Open with a heave of 22.56m (74-0.25). That mark bettered not only the 13 other student-athletes from across the country that competed in the event, but was the single-best mark by any NCAA competitor for last week.
Stephenson and the rest of the men's and women's indoor track and field teams will return to action Friday-Saturday, Feb. 3-4, in both the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. and the GVSU Showdown in Allendale, Mich.
