The graduate student led the Eagles with 429 season kills
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- Graduate student Callie Minshew (Brandon, Miss./Brandon/Mississippi State) of the Eastern Michigan University volleyball program was named to the All-Mid-American Conference Second Team, the office announced today, Nov. 18. The teams were decided by a vote of the league's 12 head coaches.
A 1,000 career kills and 100 career aces club member, Minshew led the Eagles with 429 season kills, the most of any of her five seasons as an NCAA collegiate player, and 32 total service aces. The 429 season kills ranks fourth in the all-time single-season records, topping Rachel Iaguaniello's 412 in the 2009 season. Additionally, Minshew ended her career with a career-high 32 kills against the Chippewas of Central Michigan University, Nov. 15. The 32 kill in a single match is good for ninth in the all-time record book for most kills in a single match topping former Eagle Roxanne Munch (1988) by one. Additionally, her 84 attempts in the match ranks tied for fourth with Rachel Iaquaniello (2012) and Jody Thompson (1997).
The team-leader in both kills and service aces recorded a then-career-high 25 kills and 21 digs against the Chips, Sept. 26. Her performance made her the first Eagle since Franki Strefling (25 kills and 25 digs at Kent State, Feb. 15, 2021) to record at least 25 kills and at least 20 digs in a match. Minshew and Strefling are the only Eagles to tally 25-plus kills and 20-plus digs in a match in the modern statistical era (since 2008).
The Mississippi State University transfer began the season with 13 consecutive team-leading double digit kills. Only one other MAC member had a player record the sort or more as the University of Akron's Faith Johnson went on a 15-match double-digit kill streak to start the season prior to facing the Green and White, Oct. 5. In that contest, Minshew and her crew limited Johnson to just five kills in the match, ultimately stopping the senior's consecutive streak. Additionally, in a head-to-head comparison, Minshew out-hit Johnson .262 (18-of-42) to -.094 (5-of-32).
Minshew finished her final season ranking first in the conference in attacks (10.89), second in points (4.49), and third in kills (3.89). Additionally, she ranks 17th in the nation in total attacks (1,198), 20th in total points (496.0), and 21st in total kills (429).
EMU finished the 2023 season with an overall record of 5-25 to close out the season under first year head coach Kevin Foeman.
