Minshew Records 1,000th Career Kill in Five-Set Loss to CMU

Callie Minshew became the second Eagle to enter the 1,000 Career Kills Club this season
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Graduate student Callie Minshew (Brandon, Miss./Brandon/Mississippi State) joined the 1,000 career kills club after leading the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team with a career high 31 kills in the five-set loss to in-state rival, Central Michigan University Wednesday, Nov. 15, inside the McGuirk Arena. The setback dropped Eastern Michigan's record to 5-25 overall and 3-15 in MAC play and concluded the 2023 regular season.
The Eagles were led by a double-double from Minshew, who registered 31 kills and 15 digs on the day. Samantha Basham (Granville, Ohio/Newark Catholic) also added 14 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Hannah Howard (Toledo, Ohio./Saint Ursula Academy) chipped in with 16 digs to go with four blocks from Kendal Bonney (Pioneer, Ohio North Central Ashland).
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles grabbed control of the set-one lead at 3-2 and never looked back to win 25-18. Eastern Michigan led by nine points at 16-7 before closing out the set.
SET 2 | After their win in the first set, EMU put themselves on the cusp of a sweep with a 26-24 victory in set number two. The Eagles took the set thanks to a strong performance on the attacking end. Eastern Michigan registered a .316 attack percentage with 16 kills in the set win. After the lead changed hands one time, the Eagles took control for good at 24-23 and rode that advantage to victory.
SET 3 | Eastern Michigan saw its bid for a 3-0 win end when Central Michigan took the third set. The Eagles dropped set three 25-23. Eastern trailed by as many as six points as Central Michigan grabbed the advantage for good at 14-13 in a set that was tied up six times before the Chippewas took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 4 | The Green and White then dropped their second straight set 25-14 to brind the match level at two sets apiece. The Eagles trailed by as many as 12 points as Central Michigan grabbed the advantage for good at 9-8 and Eastern Michigan wasn't able to recover in a set that was knotted up five times before the Chippewas took over.
SET 5 | Eastern Michigan grabbed a 2-0 set lead, but could not take another set on their way to losing the match. The Eagles dropped the fifth set in spite of a strong performance on the attacking end. EMU put together a .353 attack percentage with eight kills in the set loss.
Match Notes
» Minshew entered the records books once again as she posted a career-high 31 kills in the five-set loss. The 31 kills top her previous career-high of 28 kills set against KSU, Nov. 10.
» Both Basham (14) and Minshew (31) finished with double-digit kills in the match for the third contest in a row. Prior to the series with KSU and the midweek match up with the Chippewas, the last time the two recorded double-digit kills in the same match was earlier in the season against Central Michigan, Sept. 26, when Minshew recorded 25 and Basham claimed 11.
» Two Eagles contributed double-double performances in Minshew (31 kills, 15 digs) and Hannah Kivett (Chandler, Ind./Castle/Florida Gulf Coast) (44 assists, 16 digs) marking the sixth time EMU has recorded two Eagles with double-doubles in the same match this season. The last time two Eagles registered double-doubles in the same match was in the victory over Miami University, Oct. 27.
» Last season, the double-double mark was reached a total of eight times by three different Eagles (Sabrina Gremm (4), Kendall Burk (3), Raeven Chase (1)). This season, the mark has been exceeded as four different Eagles (Ava Siefke (4), Hannah Kivett (2), Elle McLoughlin (6), Callie Minshew (9)) have combined for 21 double-double performances on the season.
» Kivett's double-double marked just he second of her career after doing so for the first time against Siu-Edwardsville, Aug. 25 (17 assists, 10 digs). Her 44 helpers in the match rank as the seniors career-high topping her 28 against KSU, Nov. 10.
» As a team, EMU recorded seven total blocks to the opposing six, marking the team's 11th match out-blocking its opponent.
» Howard recorded a team-leading 16 digs in the setback. It is the 18th time in which she has recorded double-digit digs for the season.
» Five Eagles registered double-digit digs in a single match during the loss, marking the second time this season accomplishing the feat after doing the same in the first match of the series against Kent State University. Last season, EMU managed to record only four Eagles all with double-digit digs in the same match just one time, the 3-2 upset over Bowling Green State University, Oct. 21, 2022.
» The teams played beyond 25 in the second set. It marked the 13th sets this season that EMU and its opponent have prolonged a set.
» Additionally, the Eagles were victorious in the first two sets against the Chippewas. It marked the sixth contest in which the Green and White have opened a match with a 2-0 lead over its opponent going 3-3 in such matches.
Historical Notes
» Minshew's career-high 31 kills in the single match is tied for ninth in the all-time record book for most kills in a single match with former Eagle Roxanne Munch (1988). Additionally, her 84 attempts in the match rank tied for fourth with Rachel Iaquaniello (2012) and Jody Thompson (1997).
» Minshew collected a total of 428 kills in the 2023 season, the most of any of her five seasons as an NCAA collegiate player. The 428 season kills ranks fourth in the all-time single-season records topping Rachel Iaguaniello's 412 in the 2009 season.
» Starting in 1976, Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan have competed against one another just one match short of 100, with the Chippewas leading 68-31. Oct. 7, 1986, marked the Eagles first program victory over Central, interrupting a 23-year win streak in just three sets.
