Graduate student broke the program record with his 32nd career touchdown last week
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University football student-athlete Samson Evans (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge/Iowa) has been named the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league announced today, Oct. 11. Evans, a graduate student pursuing his Master's in business administration, earned the accolade after a record-breaking performance on the gridiron coupled with his achievement in the classroom.
Evans, who sports a 3.84 grade-point average in his studies, is now the all-time touchdown leader in Eastern Michigan history as he pushed his way into the end zone against Ball State University, Oct. 7, for the 32nd score of his career. Evans, who has scored all 32 of his touchdowns at EMU on the ground, broke a tie with former Huron great Gary Patton (1984-87), who held the all-time scoring mark for nearly 36 years. Evans already owns the all-time rushing touchdowns record after he surpassed the previous mark of 26 held by both Patton and Anthony Sherrell (2002-05) during the 2022 season. Evans ranks highly among touchdowns scored by active FBS players as he currently ranks fifth nationally for rushing touchdowns (32) and seventh for overall touchdowns scored (32). Evans is currently one of only 11 FBS players with 30+ touchdowns scored on the all-time active list and one of just two in the MAC and is also just 32 yards shy of reaching 2,000 rushing yards in his career.
Evans and Eastern Michigan are back in action at home inside 'The Factory' at Rynearson Stadium Saturday, Oct. 14, when the Golden Flashes of Kent State University come to town for a noon kick on CBS Sports Network. Along with the national broadcast, fans can tune in to WEMU (89.1 FM) and the Varsity Network app with Tom Helmer and Rob Rubick on the call.
