Eastern to host two home regattas this season
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University Rowing Head Coach Kemp Savage announced the 2022-23 schedule today, Sept. 8. After tying for the highest Colonial Athletic Association Championships finish in program history at third last May, the Eagles will see familiar opponents this upcoming season.
"We have a very competitive season scheduled," said Savage. "We have set up our season to see a lot of speed and we know the only way we can move to the top of the CAA is to compete with top-20 programs."
Eastern will start its season with three road scrimmages, opening with a contest against the University of Michigan, Sept. 11 at Belleville Lake.
Next, the Green and White will head west to take on the University of Wisconsin, Sept. 24, on Lake Mendota in Madison, Wis. The team will return to the Great Lake State the following weekend to scrimmage Michigan State University, Oct. 9 on the Grand River in East Lansing, Mich.
The Eagles will compete in their first official race of the season Oct. 22. when the team travels to Boston, Mass. to participate in the noted Head of the Charles regatta for the second straight season.
Eastern will finish up the fall schedule at home, Oct. 29 in the Ford Lake Shore Race. This is the first time the Eagles have hosted a fall event at home on Ford Lake since 2009.
In the new year, EMU ventures to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to duel with the University of Alabama on the Black Warrior River, March 4. Last season, the Eagles Second Varsity Eight boat finished just behind the Crimson Tide in second at 8:01.52.
Just a week later, Eastern ventures to Cherry Hill, N.J. to take part in the day-long Doc Hosea Invitational for the first time in program history, April 1.
The Green and White returns to Boston the following weekend to race Boston College on Saturday, April 8. Eastern finished five seconds ahead of BC's First Varsity Eight boat at 6:56.6 last time the pair faced off in the 2022 spring season.
The Eagles will stay on the East Coast to compete for the Knecht Cup, a two-day regatta on Cooper River in Cherry Hill N.J. This year, the event will take place, April 15-16.
Eastern concludes the regular season with its sole home competition of the spring against the University of Dayton, April 29 at Ford Lake.
This season, the CAA Championships will take place, May 14 in Cherry Hill, N.J. The conference champion will earn a bid to the NCAA Championships in Philadelphia, Pa on May 26-28.
