EMU Volleyball Falls to DePaul Blue Demons

Gremm continues to shine as the freshman paces EMU in kills
CHICAGO, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team fell to DePaul University in four sets, Saturday, Sept. 10 inside the McGrath Phillips Arena located on the campus of DePaul.
The "Gremm" reaper, Sabrina Gremm (North Royalton, Ohio-Gilmour Academy) was back on top, leading the Eagles in kills with a match-high 12 on the day. The Green and White received 12 digs once again from freshman Emma McMahon (Monroeville, Ind.-Bellmont) to lead them defensively.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles found themselves in an early deficit, dropping a tough first set, 25-15. Eastern Michigan trailed by as many as 10 points as DePaul took over the lead for good at 6-5, in a set that was tied four times before the Blue Demons took control.
SET 2 | Eastern Michigan responded to pick up a 25-16 victory in set two, evening the match at one set apiece. The Eagles scored first and never trailed in the set to earn the victory. The team opened up as much as a nine point lead at 22-13, before finishing off the set. The Eagles hit .360 over the course of the set with the front row showing a solid defensive performance, blocking four DePaul attacks in the stanza and capitalizing on 10 DePaul attacking errors on the way to victory.
SET 3| DePaul grabbed a 2-1 match lead after defeating the Eagles in set three. The Eagles dropped a tough set, 25-18 and trailed by as many as seven points as DePaul grabbed the advantage for good at 11-10, in a set that was tied just three times before the Blue Demons took over the lead.
SET 4 | Eastern Michigan then lost the fourth set, 25-15, to finish off the match. The Eagles trailed by as many as 10 points as DePaul took off for good at 11-10 and Eastern Michigan wasn't able to recover in a set that was knotted up eight times.
Match Notes
» Sophomore Madeline Timmerman (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Central) registered a match-high two aces in the loss. Timmerman has led the Eagles in aces in all three matches of the DePaul Invitational, and in four of their nine total matches. The sophomore rocketed up to the number one spot in matches with leading aces after the weekend.
» Gremm registered a match-high 12 kills as the lone Eagle to earn double-digit kills on the match. Gremm has been the single-match kills leader in three of EMU's four matches this season in which only one Eagle has recorded 10+ kills. This match marks as her fifth contest with double-digit kills and fourth with the match-high.
» The Eagles received a match-high 12 digs from McMahon, registering her seventh consecutive match with double-digit digs in her rookie season. McMahon currently holds a leading mark 134 digs in 2022.
» The Green and Whites attackers were helped by a match-high 17 assists from sophomore setter Kendall Burk (Bloomington, Ill.-University).
Historical Notes
» Prior to the DePaul Invitational, senior Samantha Basham (Granville, Ohio-Newark Catholic) trailed Gremm in total kills on the season by four. Basham now leads the Eagles in total kills (92) with Gremm coming second (84). The senior is just 21 kills away from her milestone of 700 career kills.
» Today's morning match-up with the Blue Demons was the seventh meeting between the two schools. Despite the loss, the Green and White continue to lead the all-time series record 4-3. However, the Eagles have dropped the last two consecutive meetings with DePaul.
» The four-set loss was the third loss of the 2022 campaign that the Eagles couldn't stretch a fifth set. Under Head Coach Darcy Dorton, the Eagles are 9-28 in games decided by four sets.
» Eastern Michigan's overall record for the 2022 season moves down to 0-9. The last time EMU had a season-opening nine-match losing streak was in 2000. The team later ended that streak with a 3-0 sweep victory over Alabama-Birmingham, Sept. 16, 2000.

The Green and White will ship over to Lynchburg, Va. for the Liberty University Tournament, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 16-17. The Eagles are set to take on Radford University for the first time in program history at noon, before seeing Coppin State University at 3 p.m. Saturday will see Eastern share the court with tournament host, Liberty at 3 p.m.
