Kadian Clarke produces school-record hammer throw of 60.77m
COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The throwers of Eastern Michigan University had a great showing at the Jesse Owens Classic today, April 15, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
How It Happened
Senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) broke the 60m-plateau in the hammer throw, achieving a mark of 60.77m, the best throw by a collegiate competitor in the event. The veteran thrower is the only Eagle in team history to surpass 60 meters and is currently one of two student-athletes in the Mid-American Conference to do it. Additionally, sophomore Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield South) improved her PR in the same event with a toss of 54.37m, which ranks sixth in the EMU record book.
Elsewhere in the field, senior Joe Duff (Croswell, Mich.-Crosswell-Lexington (Concordia University)) produced the fifth-best javelin throw in program history at 63.72m. Meanwhile, junior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) took second in the hammer throw with a heave of 61.99m.
On the track, all four Eagles in the men's 1500m races registered career-best times, highlighted by Linus Vennemann's (Osnabrück, Germany-Gymnasium "In der Wüste") time of 3:48.28. Eastern also saw a pair of top-10 finishes in the women's 200m dash, as freshman Saraiah Walkes (Manatee County, Fla.-The-Out-of-Door Academy) and sophomore Kilani Harvey (Orlando, Fla.-Jones (Morehead State)) finished sixth (24.14) and ninth (24.43), respectively.
