COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – After a strong showing by the distance runners in California, the Eastern Michigan University track & field program is ready to showcase its talent at Ohio State University's Jesse Owens Classic, April 22-23. Friday's action is set for 1 p.m. starting with the women's javelin competition, while the men's shot put will kick off Saturday's competitions at 10 a.m.
Last weekend, EMU saw three Eagles move up in the all-time top-10 list in different events. Junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) now owns the second-best outdoor 5000m time in school history, clocking in at 13:32.47 at the Bryan Clay Invitational, April 14. That same day, sophomore Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) recorded the ninth-best 10K time of 29:24.57 at the Mt. SAC Relays. At the Don Kleinow Invitational, senior Joe Duff (Crosswell, Mich.-Crosswell-Lexington (Concordia University)) produced a 63.05-meter javelin throw, the sixth-best mark in program history.
Meanwhile, junior Faith Rono (Eldoret, Kenya (Middle Tennessee State)) shaved over eight seconds off her previous-best 5000m time to remain at sixth in the EMU record book at 16:30.20.
With the NCAA East Preliminary Championships just over a month away, the women's team has two members with NCAA qualifying marks in junior Sofia Ivanko (Buenos Aires, Argentina-St. Matthew's College) (10,000m - 35:15.15) and senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) (Shot Put - 15.63m; Hammer Throw - 56.92m).
Meanwhile, the men have nine competitors with qualifying marks: freshmen Brendan Hill (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne) (HJ - 2.06m) and Ousman Kamara (Coatesville, Pa.-Coatesville) (HJ - 2.06m), sophomores Almighty Williamson (Baltimore, Md.-Digital Harbor (Barton C.C.)) (110H - 14.14) and Gualter (10,000m - 29:24.57), juniors Baldvin Magnusson (5000m - 13:32.47) and Richie Sadler (Greenville, S.C.-Greer (Coastal Carolina)) (TJ - 15.06m), and seniors Solomon Costa (Gahanna, Ohio-Gahanna Lincoln) (3000S - 8:50.93), Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed (Windhoek, Namibia-Fishburne Military (Va.)(Bethany College)) (TJ - 15.35m), and senior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) (HT - 64.36m).
The Buckeyes are coming off a strong season where both the men's and women's teams finished runner-up at the Big Ten Indoor Championships, Feb. 26. Additionally, the men are the top-ranked team in the Great Lakes Region, while the women are second, according to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
