MOREHEAD, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell in both games of a doubleheader Saturday, March 5, against Morehead State University.
Junior Trevor House (Okeana, Ohio-Ross) (0-1) took the loss in the first contest while freshman Adam Falinski (Howell, Mich.-Detroit Catholic Central) (1-2) was credited with a loss in the final game of the doubleheader.
Eastern (2-7) combined for eight home runs on Saturday, coupled with 18 runs scored and 24 hits (14 extra base hits). Senior Christian Bault (Maineville, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller) and junior Gabe Denton (Clare, Mich.-Clare) led the Eagles with three RBIs apiece over the two contests.
How It Happened – Game 1
EMU took a commanding, 13-8, lead heading into the seventh inning after Eastern tallied four runs in the top of the sixth inning. In that inning, senior Brady Huebbe (Peru, Ill.-La Salle-Peru (Northern Illinois)) led off with a double and later scored on an RBI double courtesy of fellow senior Shane Easter (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Comstock). Bault would drive in Easter in the next at-bat. To cap off a strong top of the sixth, Denton belted a two-run home run over the center field wall to give Eastern Michigan the five-run lead.
Despite the lead, Morehead State (5-7) answered with seven runs in its final two innings at bat to defeat EMU by one run, 15-14.
Game Notes – Game 1
» EMU tabbed a season-high 18 hits on Saturday afternoon. Eastern out-hit Morehead State 18-16 despite the loss.
» The Eagles got the most production in the sixth inning, tallying four runs on five hits, including a two-run home run, in the inning.
» Eastern earned a season-high 14 runs in the loss. Additionally, the Eagles tallied 10-or-more runs for the first time this season.
» Denton tabbed two homers in the game. He is the second EMU player this season to total two home runs in a game (Kirk – 2, at Tennessee Tech, Feb. 26). Additionally, it is just the second time Denton has hit multiple home runs while donning the Green and White (2 - vs. St. Bonaventure, May 1, 2021).
How It Happened – Game 2
Eastern Michigan led 2-1 after three innings of play until MSU tallied a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take the lead, 3-2. Morehead State trailed after the top half of the sixth inning when Eastern pushed across a run courtesy of a Bault RBI single.
MSU would regain the lead in the same inning, scoring twice on back-to-back solo home runs. Morehead State would keep the one-run advantage for the remainder of the game.
Game Notes – Game 2
» Bault went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a homer in the final game of the doubleheader on Saturday. The senior totaled three hits in both games, and currently rides a five-game hitting streak for Eastern.
» Freshman Aaron Dolney (Plymouth, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) continues to impress for the Eagles. Dolney went 2-for-3 and launched his first collegiate home run.
» Fellow freshman Coltrane Rubner (Livonia, Mich.-Livonia Stevenson) finished 1-for-3. With the base knock, the Livonia, Mich. native currently rides a four-game hitting streak.
Historical Notes
» The Eagles belted six home runs in the first game of the doubleheader Saturday. The six round-trippers is the most EMU has tallied in a contest in over a decade. The last time Eastern Michigan earned six home runs in a game came in a 13-4 victory over Ohio University, May 22, 2009.
» With the two victories on Saturday, MSU leads the all-time head-to-head series 8-4.
