Two Eagles Qualify for NCAA Indoor Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Two Eagles will represent the Eastern Michigan University track & field program at the NCAA Indoor Championships, March 11-12, the organization announced Tuesday, March 1.
Making the trip to Birmingham, Ala. will be junior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) and graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) who will both compete in the weight throw. The competition is set for Friday, March 11 at 5 p.m. E.T. The championships will be hosted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.
Stephenson reclaimed his school record in the event with a massive toss of 23.22m at Michigan Invitational, Jan. 22. His 23.22-meter throw ranks him first in the Mid-American Conference and third in the nation. Meanwhile, Bryant had a strong season as well, achieving a career-high heave of 23.01m at Grand Valley State University's Big Meet, Feb. 11.
Both throwers earned Second Team All-American honors in the event at last year's national indoor meet, March 11. In Fayetteville, Ark., Bryant finished in 11th with a toss of 21.13m, while Stephenson produced a 19.32m toss for 16th.
Most recently, Stephenson (22.26m) and Bryant (21.72m) took second and third, respectively in the weight throw at the Mid-American Conference Championships, Feb. 25-26.
ESPN3 will stream the championships live starting at 11 a.m. E.T. Friday, March 11, and 11:30 a.m. E.T. Saturday, March 12. A re-air of the championship will take place starting at 9:30 p.m. E.T. Sunday, March 13, on ESPNU.
