BELGRADE, Serbia (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University track & field saw junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) impress in the first round of the men's 3000m race at the 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championships, where he advanced to the finals today, March 18.
"I'm so happy for Vinny, to go to your first major championship and make the final is an impressive feat," said Assistant Coach Mark Rinker. "He put himself in position to make the final and fought all the way. I'm excited for him -- now we are on to the final on Sunday!"
Magnusson ran in the first heat, sticking in the middle of the pack most of the race. The Icelandic native had a great kick in the final lap, finishing sixth with a time of 7:49.34. The time is the second-best of his career in the event, as he topped his 7:53.72 effort at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships, March 13. The junior will look to pass his PR of 7:47.51, set earlier this year at the David Hemery Valentine Invite, Feb. 12.
With the top four automatically qualifying for the finals, the harrier had to wait to see how the other two heats performed to be one of the next three fastest competitors. Magnusson's time proved strong as it was the sixth-fastest of the day, besting every other runner's time in heats No. 2 and 3. Ethiopia's Lamecha Girma recorded the top time, crossing the finish line at 7:46.21 in the first heat.
The 3000m is set for Sunday, March 20, at 7:10 E.T. and can be streamed via Peacock.
