The harrier will compete in the 3000m in Belgrade, Serbia

BELGRADE, Serbia (EMUEagles.com) – Junior harrier Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) is ready to represent Iceland at the 18th edition of the World Athletics Indoor Championships in the 3000m, March 18-20. The first round is scheduled for Friday at 1:30 p.m. local time, while the final takes place on Sunday at 12:05 p.m.

"We are really excited that Vinny will get the chance to represent his country at the World Indoor Championships," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "He has had a tremendous indoor season and this will give him valuable experience at the very highest level which will help him continue to develop his racing skills."

"It's always special for an athlete to get to represent their country at major international competitions," said Assistant Coach Mark Rinker. "Vinny was able to win a bronze medal last summer at the European U23 Championships. I'm excited for him that now he is in line to take the next step to compete at the Indoor World Championships as he continues his development on the world stage."

Magnusson qualified for the championships after his performance in the 3000 earlier this year at the David Hemery Valentine Invite, Feb. 12. At the meet, the Icelandic native registered a program-best time of 7:47.71 for fifth in the race, passing the 7:50.00 world standard to punch his ticket to the championships and set an Icelandic national record. This will be the junior's first appearance at the championship meet.

The championships typically take place every two years and are hosted by major cities around the globe. Birmingham, England was the site of the 2018 championships where the United States captured 18 medals to win the competition. That year, Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia won the men's 3000 with a time of 8:14.41. The championship record in the race is 7:34.71, set by Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie.
