Multiple Eagles Earn MAC Athlete of the Week Awards

Runner Baldvin Magnusson and thrower Newlyn Stephenson earn league honors
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University track & field program saw two student-athletes earn Mid-American Conference Athlete of the Week honors in juniors Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) and Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Academy), the league office announced today, Feb. 9.
Magnusson highlighted the second day of the Meyo Invitational for EMU, capturing the Meyo Mile crown with a personal-best time of 3:58.08, Feb. 5. The harrier now owns the third-best mile time in school history and is the sixth Eagle to run a sub-four-minute mile. Late EMU legend Paul McMullen owns the program record, as he crossed the finish line in 3:57.34 at the Meyo Invitational, Feb. 4, 1995.
The junior's 3:58.08 time ranks first in the Mid-American Conference and rounds out the top-30 in the nation. Additionally, the Iceland native owns the league's best 5000 time, clocking in at 13:41.39 at the GVSU Holiday Open, Dec. 3. This marked the sixth time Magnusson has picked up the league's weekly award.
Magnusson will head to Boston University's Track & Tennis Center where he will compete in the 3000. Saturday's race is set to begin at 7:15 p.m. and can be watched on Flo Track. The Icelandic product owns the second-best time in the event in the EMU record book at 7:53.72. The harrier produced his personal-best time at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships, taking seventh to earn First Team All-American honors, March 13.
Stephenson earns the weekly honor after winning the weight throw competition with a toss of 22.50m at the GVSU Snowdown Showdown, Feb. 4. The junior currently owns the best heave in the Mid-American Conference at 23.22m, good for third in the nation. He produced a personal-best mark of 23.22m at the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 22.
Stephenson and his fellow throwers will return to Allendale, Mich. for the GVSU Big Meet, Feb. 11. There will be three streaming links available for the GVSU Big Meet (9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., 1:30 - 3 p.m., and 3 - 9 p.m.).
