The Eagles look to gain more experience heading into the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. & BOSTON, Mass. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track & field program will split up once again this weekend with meets at Grand Valley State University and Boston University. Most of the team will compete in the GVSU Big Meet, Feb. 11, while junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) will be in Beantown for the David Hemery Valentine Invite, Feb. 12. Action in Allendale, Mich. and Boston, Mass. are both set for 9 a.m.

Eastern has had great success in Allendale, Mich., as the Eagles have produced a school record in each of their last two outings inside the Kelly Family Sports Center. Graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) set the then-school record in the weight throw with a toss of 22.56m at the GVSU Holiday Open, Dec. 3, 2021. Since then, Bryant has raised his personal best in the event to 22.85m, while junior teammate Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, In.d-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) holds the program record now at 23.22m.

Stephenson and Bryant currently rank No. 1 and 2 in the Mid-American Conference, respectively. Furthermore, the two throwers sit third and fourth in the nation, respectively. Only Grand Canyon's Israel Oloyede (24.45m) and Alabama's Bobby Colantonio (24.15m) have achieved further marks.

Last weekend, senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) improved her own school record, registering a weight throw of 21.13m at the GVSU Snowdown Showdown, Feb. 5. Her 21.13m mark is good enough for first in the MAC and 22nd in the country. Additionally, she leads the league by nearly two meters, with the next closest throw being a 19.23m effort from classmate Ariel Floyd (Mount Clemens, Mich.-Chippewa Valley (Olivet College)).

There will be three streaming links available for the GVSU Big Meet (9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., 1:30 - 3 p.m., and 3 - 9 p.m.).

Meanwhile, Magnusson heads to Boston University's Track & Tennis Center where he will compete in the 3000. Saturday's race is set to begin at 7:15 p.m. and can be watched on Flo Track. The Icelandic product owns the second-best time in the event in the EMU record book at 7:53.72. The harrier produced his personal-best time at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships, taking seventh to earn First Team All-American honors, March 13.
