LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — In its first action of the 2022 spring season, the Eastern Michigan  University women's golf team has to wait on edge as tiebreakers decided a pair of matches on the opening day of the Mid-American Match Play Challenge on the par 72, 6,068-yards Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club course. The fifth-seeded Eagles advanced past No. 12 Ball State University after finishing tied in the opening round before the tiebreaker went the wrong way after they halved with the fourth-seeded Zips of the University of Akron in the quarterfinals.

Eastern Michigan will now face No. 6 Morehead State University, who fell to No. 3 Illinois State University, 4-1, in Monday's second round

How It Happened
» Schools are competing in teams of five with the seeds determined by their current GolfStat rankings. Each of the five matches is worth one point to the winner. If the competitors end up all-square after 18 holes, each school receives ½ point. The school with the most points after the five matches wins.
» Unlike stroke play, in which the unit of scoring is the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds of golf, match play scoring consists of individual holes won, halved or lost. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point. Golfers play as normal, counting the strokes taken on a given hole. The golfer with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the golfers tie, then the hole is halved. Also, once a player is "up" more holes than there are holes remaining to play, the match is over.
» Freshman Alyssa DiMarcantonio (Maple, Ontario-Tommy Douglas Secondary School) posted 2-0 mark on the day to lead EMU. Junior Natai Apichonlati (Bangkok, Thailand-The Regent's International School) and freshman Kyleigh Dull (Fremont, Ohio-Lakota) also were undefeated going 1-0-1 on the day.
» EMU won two matches in the opening round against BSU, and was able to advance on total margin of victory between all five contests.
» DiMarcantonio cruised to a 7&5 win over Dylann Armstrong, while Dull added a 3&2 triumph over Morgan Lewis (BSU).
» Apichonlati tied with Ball State's Hadley Moritz, while sophomore Sophia Wygonik (Westland, Mich.-Livonia Franklin) and Anna Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) dropped their tilts.
» In Monday's finale, Eastern Michigan fought back to tie Akron at 2-2-1, but this time it was the Zips advancing via margin of victories in the entire matchup.
» DiMarcantonio was dominant against Akron's Riley Dean, winning 7&6, while Apichonlati finished 1-up over Ivana Shah.
» Dull roared back from 2-down on No. 14 to tie Jessica Hahn. Wygonik and Watson came up short,  falling 5&4 and 6&4, respectively.
» This was EMU's first match play event since the 2020 Mid-American Match Play, Feb. 3-4.
