Men's Track & Field in First Place After Day One of MAC Indoor Championships

Women's team in fourth place after first day of competition
Day One Results
KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track & field program saw great success on day one of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships today, Feb. 25, inside Kent State Field House.
"I'm really proud of our team," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "We had a strong first day and I feel like we're in a great position heading into the final day. We're excited to get out there and battle again tomorrow."
After five events scored, EMU leads the men's competition with 52 points, followed by Akron with 47. Meanwhile, the EMU women's team sits in fourth with 24 points, while Toledo owns the top spot with 35.
Senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) shined in the weight throw as she took home the gold with a mark of 20.33m, the only thrower to reach the 20-meter plateau. Additionally, this is the first MAC title of her career.
The men's distance runners, led by junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University), put forth a strong display. Magnusson, after running in the 800m preliminaries earlier in the day, went on to capture the 5000m crown with a time of 14:21.21. Sophomore Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) took second (14:22.96), while freshman Josh Hill (Amherst, Ohio-Amherst Steel) grabbed fourth (14:27.02) as the trio totaled 22 points in the event.
Elsewhere on the track, the Eagles had great success across the board in sprints and hurdles. On the men's side, sophomores Kaleb Simpson (Bexley, Ohio-St. Charles Preparatory) and Kyle Martin (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Ann Arbor Huron) punched their tickets to the finals in both the 60 and 200. Classmate Almighty Williamson (Baltimore, Md.-Digital Harbor (Barton C.C.)) is set to tackle the 60m dash and 60m hurdles.
Junior Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peter's) produced a season-best time of 8.51 in the 60H prelims to advance, while classmates Brenna Cavanuagh (Bentleyville, Pa.-Bentworth) (8.64) and Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) (8.75) also qualified for tomorrow's showdown.
The men's weight throwers earned 14 total points on the day as junior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) finished runner-up at 22.26m, while graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) took third with a toss of 21.72m.
In the men's heptathlon, senior Skyler Lester (Marietta, Ga.-Marietta) had a strong showing, placing top three in each event, including first-place finishes in the 60m dash (7.13) and high jump (2.05m). The senior is currently in first with 3137 points.
