Two Eagles Earn MAC Athlete of the Week Honors

Runner Baldvin Magnusson and thrower Newlyn Stephenson earn league award
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track & field program saw two student-athletes earn Mid-American Conference Athlete of the Week honors in junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) and graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial), the league office announced today, Feb. 16.
The Iceland native recorded a school-record time of 7:47.51 for fifth in the 3000 at the David Hemery Valentine Invite, Feb 12. The junior's effort is an Icelandic national record and qualifies him for the 2022 World Indoor Championships. The championships will take place next month in Belgrade, Serbia, March 18-20. Magnusson's 7:47.51 time ranks first in the Mid-American Conference and 20th in the nation.
Bryant won the weight throw with a personal-best toss of 23.01m at the GVSU Big Meet, Feb. 11. His mark ranks second in the Mid-American Conference and fourth in the nation. Additionally, only four men's throwers in the country have reached the 23-meter plateau.
The Eagles will return to Ann Arbor, Mich. for the Silverston Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan, Feb. 18.
