The Silverston Invitational will serve as EMU's final regular season tune-up

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University track & field program will participate in its final regular season indoor meet this Friday, Feb. 18, at the Silverston Invitational. The meet, hosted by the University of Michigan, is set to begin at 4 p.m. inside the U-M Indoor Track Building.

Friday will mark the third time the Eagles have competed at Michigan this season. Last time the team was in Ann Arbor, junior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) broke EMU's weight throw record with a toss of 23.22m at the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 22. The mark currently tops the Mid-American Conference and puts Stepheson at No. 3 in the country.

At the same meet, senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) improved her own school record in the weight throw to 20.62m. Since then, the veteran thrower has upped her game to 21.54m, the best toss in the conference and 18th in the nation.

EMU has also made great strides on the track over the past few meets. The 4x400 quartet of freshman Saraiah Walkes (Manatee County, Fla.-The-Out-of-Door-Academy), juniors Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) and Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Ann Arbor Pioneer), and sophomore Noriyah Johnson (Chanai, Green-Second General (Abilene Christian)) produced a season-best time of 3:44.42 at the GVSU Big Meet, Feb. 11. The squad's time paces the MAC and is a nearly six-second improvement from the last year's performance at the indoor conference meet (3:50.90).

For the men, the hurdlers have been electric, highlighted by great outings from sophomore Almighty Williamson (Baltimore, Md.-Digital Harbor (Barton C.C.)) and junior Payne Wylie (Elstow, Saskatchewan-Colonsay School). The duo rank first (7.87) and second (7.90) in the league in the 60m hurdles, respectively.

Following Friday's meet, the program will prepare for MAC Indoor Championships, Feb. 25-26. The league showdown takes place in Kent, Ohio, hosted by Kent State University.
