YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —  The Eastern Michigan University football team hosted its 60th annual football banquet Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Ann Arbor Marriott Ypsilanti at Eagle Crest. The banquet served as the celebration of the team's 2022 individual award winners, which were announced by members of the EMU football coaching staff.

Senior running back Samson Evans (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge-Iowa) was named the team's Most Valuable Player as well as the James M. "Bingo" Brown award recipient, given to the team's Most Valuable Offensive Player. A Second Team All-MAC selection, Evans earned the honor after a historic season in the backfield for EMU. The Crystal Lake, Ill., native scored his 27th career rushing touchdown to move into first place in Eastern Michigan program history in the category during a 2022 season which saw him rush for 100+ yards in four contests, a career-best mark. His 27 scores put him in a tie for third on EMU's all-time touchdowns list (rushing and receiving). With 1,084 yards on the ground this season, Evans is the 14th EMU player to rush for a total of 1,000 yards or more in a single season. The senior's current total is good for eighth all-time in single-season laurels at EMU. His 13 touchdowns in 2022 rank second in the MAC and 23rd nationally.

Earning the team's John E. Borowiec Most Valuable Defensive Player Award, the Theme Award, and the Torchbearer Leader Award was senior defensive end, Jose Ramirez (Lake Alfred, Fla.-Auburndale-Arizona-Riverside City). One of the most dominant pass rushers in college football, Ramirez finished the 2022 regular season slate on numerous national leaderboards. He was first in the nation with 1.09 sacks per game, tied for first in total sacks (12.0), and finished second nationally with 1.8 tackles for loss per contest. He also owns the nation's second-best single-game performance (in terms of sacks) this season. He collected a program-record 4.0 in Eastern's game at Western Michigan University, Oct. 8.  That game was one of three multiple-sack performances he issued for EMU this season.

The Mid-American Conference's Defensive Player of the Year, Ramirez is Eastern Michigan's third-leading tackler this season with 63 stops, and leads the Eagles in both quarterback hurries (10) and forced fumbles (2). His 12 sacks are an all-time single-season record at EMU. He now has 20.5 sacks in his career, which places him second all-time in program history. Ramirez is only the fourth player since 1998 to record double-digit sacks in a single season for Eastern Michigan. Additionally, Ramirez had 19.5 TFLs during the 2022 regular season, tied for ninth in school history and the most since multiple-year National Football League veteran and E-Club Hall of Fame inductee Jason Jones recorded the same number in 2007. His 34 career tackles for loss put Ramirez fifth in the EMU record book. He has earned All-MAC status in consecutive seasons.

The Special Teams Most Valuable Player honor went to sophomore placekicker Jesús Gómez (Puebla, Mexico-Prapa Tec Puebla). Gomez wasted no time entering the EMU record books in his first season as the team's primary place kicker. The team's leader in total points (82), Gomez has knocked in 13-of-16 field goal attempts this season (81%),  a percentage which ranks fourth in the MAC. Additionally, he was a perfect 43-of-43 on extra point attempts during the 2022 regular season.  Gomez's signature kick came against Ball State University, Oct. 22, when he drilled a program-record-tying 55-yard field goal attempt as time expired in the first half.

Senior offensive lineman Sidy Sow (Bromont, Quebec-J-H Leclerc-Champlain Lennoxville) took home the Harold E. Sponberg Down Lineman Award while senior wide receiver Dylan Drummond (Cleveland, Ohio-Cuyahoga Heights) collected the Elton J. Rynearson Scholar-Athlete Award.

Sow collected All-MAC honors for the third consecutive year after earning First Team All-MAC accolades in 2022. The all-time leader in Eastern Michigan history in games played (56) and games started (54), he will go down as one of the best offensive linemen to don the green and white. On the field for 876 snaps in 2022, Sow helped the Eagles lead the MAC in red zone offense (95.6%) and third down percentage (45.1), while finishing second in team passing efficiency (136.1). All told, the Bromont, Quebec, native directly allowed just two sacks this season and only six in his distinguished career.

A two-time Academic All-District honoree from the College Sports Communicators (CSC), Drummond is one of the most reliable pass catchers in the nation. He currently ranks 25th among all active NCAA players with 176 receptions in his career. Additionally, the wideout is just 57 receiving yards shy of becoming a 2,000-yard receiver for the Green and White in his career.

The E-Gridiron group's newcomers of the year honors went to senior quarterback Taylor Powell (Fayetteville, Ark.-Fayetteville-Missouri-Troy) for his offensive efforts and to senior linebacker Joe Sparacio (Naples, Fla.-First Baptist Academy-Boston College) for his season performance on defense.

Powell has tallied his second-consecutive 1,000-yard passing season and first in an Eastern Michigan uniform in 2022. The Fayetteville, Ark., native was named a "Manning Award Star of the Week" sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, Nov. 21, for the first time in his career for his performance in EMU's 31-24 victory over Kent State University, Nov. 16. Meanwhile, Sparacio was second on the squad with 84 tackles to go along with six tackles for loss, one sack, and one interception. His most prolific game came at Ball State University, Oct. 22, when he racked up 16 stops to go along with one fumble recovery.

Senior tight end Blake Daniels (Macomb, Mich.-L'Anse Creuse North-Davenport), sophomore linebacker Zach Mowchan (Dillsburg Pa.-Northern York), and freshman defensive back Jason Marshall (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) earned the team's Scout Team Player of the Year award for their efforts preparing the team for competition each week on special teams, offense, and defense, respectively.

Completing the awards handed out by Head Coach Chris Creighton and his staff was the Team Player Award, given to senior linebacker Tariq Speights (Valencia, Calif.-Valencia-College of the Canyons). Off the field, Speights helped organize a voter registration drive at EMU to get students out to vote. The goal was to challenge every eligible member of Eastern's varsity teams to be registered to vote. Additionally, he helped organize a Black Lives Matter rally that involved both athletic departments of EMU and the University of Michigan. The rally was about student-athletes using their platform as college athletes, opening eyes, sharing a cause, and bringing awareness to racial inequality in this country. He also hosted a MLK Day March for student-athletes in Ypsilanti. The celebration consisted of both an in-person march and virtual panel discussion. Due in part to his leadership, EMU Athletics was able to send five student-athletes and an administrator to the Black Student-Athlete Summit this summer, and, upon returning, Speights developed a Black Student-Athlete organization on campus.

The Eastern Michigan careers of 14 program-defining student-athletes were honored at the event: Richard Bates Jr. (Kenner, La.-Scotlandville Magnet-Independence C.C.), Brandon Benson (Triangle , Va.-Hylton-Bucknell), Hassan Beydoun (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn), Blake Bogan (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc), Jordan Crawford (Houston, Texas-Pearland-Tyler J.C.), Drummond, Michael Foor (Carleton, Mich.-Airport), Gunnar Oakes (Swanton, Ohio-Swanton), Powell, Ramirez, Sow, Speights, Grant Trueman (Chino Hills, Calif.-Chino Hills-Citrus College), and Russell Vaden IV (Louisville, Ky.-Moore).

EMU put together yet another impressive season in 2022, adding to the success that has come to define the last nine years. With its eight regular-season wins, Eastern claimed a share of the MAC's West Division title for the first time as well as the Michigan MAC trophy for the first time since 2012.

The Eagles will play in their fifth bowl game in the last seven seasons. Prior to 2016, Eastern had reached bowl eligibility just twice in its history and had earned the opportunity to play in a postseason bowl just once (1987 California Bowl). Additionally, Eastern earned bowl eligibility for the fourth consecutive season (excluding COVID-shortened 2020 season), the first such occurrence in program history.

Eastern Michigan will take on San Jose State University in the 26th Annual Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Tuesday, Dec. 20, at Albertsons Stadium in Boise, Idaho.  Kickoff for the game will be at 3:30 p.m. ET (1:30 p.m. MT) on ESPN. The Eagles will face off against San Jose State for the second time in the postseason, as the matchup is a rematch of the 1987 California Bowl. The then-Hurons were a 17-point underdog, but EMU prevailed with a 30-27 win over the Spartans in Fresno, Calif., Dec. 12, 1987
