The award is given annually to the nation’s best defensive end

CHICAGO, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) - Ted Hendricks and the Ted Hendricks foundation have named Eastern Michigan University defensive end Jose Ramirez (Lake Alfred, Fla.-Auburndale-Arizona-Riverside City) as a finalist for the 2022 Ted Hendricks award, the organization announced Monday, Nov. 28. The honor is bestowed annually upon the nation's top defensive end. Ramirez is one of 37 finalists across the nation.

One of the most dominant pass rushers in college football, Ramirez finished the 2022 regular season slate on numerous national leaderboards. He was first in the nation with 1.09 sacks per game, tied for first in total sacks (12.0), and finished second nationally with 1.8 tackles for loss per contest. He also owns the nation's second-best single-game performance (in terms of sacks) this season. He collected a program-record 4.0 in Eastern's game at Western Michigan University, Oct. 8.  That game was one of three multiple-sack performances he issued for EMU this season.

He is Eastern Michigan's third-leading tackler this season with 63 stops, and leads the Eagles in both quarterback hurries (10) and forced fumbles (2).

Ramirez's 12 sacks is an all-time single-season record at EMU. He now has 20.5 sacks in his career, which places him second all-time in program history. He is only the fourth player since 1998 to record double-digit sacks in a single season for Eastern Michigan.

Additionally, Ramirez had 19.5 TFLs during the 2022 regular season, tied for ninth in school history and the most since multiple-year National Football League veteran and E-Club Hall of Fame inductee Jason Jones recorded the same number in 2007. His 34 career tackles for loss put Ramirez fifth in the EMU record book.

A preseason All-MAC selection in both Athlon Sports' and Phil Steele's annual preseason reviews, Ramirez is coming off a Third Team All-MAC recognition in 2021. He appeared in all 13 games for the Green and White, eight of which were starts, including the final seven games of the year. Ramirez, in 2021, ranked 10th in the MAC with 6.0 sacks, a then-career-best mark. He was third on the team with 63 total tackles (32 solo, 31 assisted), and led the team with 12 tackles for loss. Ramirez helped EMU force 15 regular-season turnovers a season ago, forcing a team-leading three fumbles along the way. The Lake Alfred, Fla. native also earned All-MAC accolades in 2020.

The 2022 Ted Hendricks award winner will be announced Dec. 7.

Ramirez and the rest of the Eagles will play in another postseason bowl game in 2022, with a detailed announcement on the team's bowl game destination and matchup set for Sunday, Dec. 4. Stay tuned to EMUEagles.com and @EMUFB on social media for the most up-to-date coverage.
