GREENWOOD, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)
– Recognized for their success on and off the court, Eastern Michigan University volleyball had four student-athletes named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team, the organization announced Tuesday, Nov. 22. Named to the prestigious list were graduate student Callie Minshew (Brandon, Miss.-Brandon-Mississippi State), junior Bella Hommes (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern), sophomore Madeline Timmerman (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Central), and sophomore Mackenzie Gross (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven).

The 2022 Academic All‐District® Women's Volleyball Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student‐athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All‐America® program separately recognizes volleyball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. Academic All‐District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All‐America® ballot. First‐, second and third‐team Academic All‐America® honorees will be announced in late December.

While obtaining her master's degree, Minshew was one of the Eagles' top point scorers on the season, averaging 2.04 kills per set. Over the course of the season, she tallied 155 kills on 514 swings. The Mississippi native had five matches this season with double-digit kills, with a season-best 15 against Northern Illinois, Nov. 11. Minshew also totaled double-digit points eight times this season, including a season-best 17.5 in the same match against Northern Illinois.

Hommes shined on the defensive side of the ball, finishing with 187 digs, good for second on the team. She also had a .948 receiving percentage on 384 attempts. On the offensive side, Hommes excelled as a server for Eastern. She was second on the team in service aces with 24, including seven matches with multiple aces. Twice, she tallied four aces in one match, against Northern Illinois, Nov. 11, and at Miami (Ohio), Oct. 15. In addition, she tallied 21 total assists.

Timmerman is an offensive staple for Eastern Michigan, scoring 190.5 points alongside 127 kills. Additionally, the sophomore's 127 kills ranked fifth on the team. On the defensive side, Timmerman has already eclipsed her previous career-bests in block assists and total blocks, with 71 and 78.0, respectively. Timmerman appeared in 29 of the 30 total matches starting in 28, the most of any Eagle this season.

Gross has enjoyed more playing time in her second season with the Eagles, setting new career-bests in nearly every statistical category. Gross finished with 41 kills, 1 block solo, 17 block assists, 18 total blocks and 50.0 points. The sophomore had a breakout series against Bowling Green, where she set a career-high points total of 7.5 with a career-best 6 kills in the first night of action, Oct. 21. The next night, Oct. 22, Gross set a career-best in blocks with three.
