The team picked up multiple wins in both singles and doubles
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team took part in the WMU Invitational, hosted by EMU's Mid-American Conference and in-state counterpart, Western Michigan University, last weekend, Nov. 11-13.
Eastern competed in both the singles and doubles draw of the event, finishing the action with two victories on the doubles side of the action, and four singles wins.
The WMU invitational brought Eastern's 2022 fall schedule to a close. Although the results do not count towards the team's overall record for the 2022-23 campaign, the results do count towards the statistics of the individual players.
How It Happened
The tournament got underway Friday, Nov. 11, with Prerna Vichare (Mumbai, India-Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics) matching up in the singles bracket against Northern Illinois University. Although she ultimately fell in the match, she did take it to a third-set tiebreak (3-6, 6-2, 3-10). Her teammate, Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czech Republic-Gymnazium Jana Blahoslava) was able to pick up a win in her match, defeating her counterpart from Cleveland State University, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. The win was the first by any Eagle on the singles front this fall.
Elsewhere in singles, both Vidisha Reddy (Hyderabad, India-Villa Marie-Penwest Edinboro) and Asia Allen (Sanford, Fla.-Seminole-Rio Grand Valley) fell in hard fought, straight-set matches.
First-year Eagle Regina Mendez (Los Cabos, Mexico-Picacho McGregor) got in on the singles draw on day two, Saturday, Nov. 14, falling to Western's Valeriya Monko in a three-set thriller, 6-4, 6-7, 0-1 (10-1). Vichare, Reddy, and Allen also fell in their day two singles matches, however Brichackova stayed red hot, this time defeating NIU's Isabella Righi in straight-set fashion, 6-2, 2-1.
Brichackova finished her perfect weekend Sunday, Nov. 13, with a win against Oakland University, while Vichare also got in the win column.
In doubles action, the pairing of Vichare and Brichackova got the weekend started right with a victory over their first-round opponent, Cleveland State. Mendez and Reddy teamed up as well, but were unable to come away with a victory.
Vichare and Brichackova stayed perfect Saturday, earning another victory, over Wayne State, 6-3. The duo fell in their final round of play, 2-6, Sunday.
