The nation’s longest-running college football all-star game will be played Feb. 2, 2023 in Las Vegas

TAMPA, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University senior defensive end Jose Ramirez (Lake Alfred, Fla.-Auburndale-Arizona-Riverside City) has accepted an invitation to play in the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl, college football's longest-running all-star game, the Shrine Bowl office announced Wednesday, Nov. 10. The event will take place Thursday, Feb. 2, inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev.

One of the most dominant pass rushers in college football, Ramirez is currently ranked eighth in the nation with 0.89 sacks per game average in 2022. He leads all players in the Mid-American Conference with 8.0 sacks this season. Additionally, he is 10th in the country in tackles for loss, where he averages 1.4 per game. He also owns the nation's second-best single-game performance (in terms of sacks) this season. He collected a program-record 4.0 in Eastern's game at Western Michigan University, Oct. 8.

He is Eastern Michigan's third-leading tackler this season with 52 stops, and leads the Eagles in both quarterback hurries (7) and forced fumbles (2).

Ramirez has 16.5 sacks in his career, which places him seventh all-time in program history, moving most recently past Jeremiah Harris (2014-18), who totaled 16.0 in his career. Additionally, the 2.0 TFLs Ramirez recorded against the University of Toledo, Oct. 29, moved him up to 27.0 TFLs in his career, tying him with Josh Hunt (2005-08) for eighth in program history. He also recorded two quarterback hurries and batted down one pass at the line.

A preseason All-MAC selection in both Athlon Sports' and Phil Steele's annual preseason reviews, Ramirez is coming off a Third Team All-MAC recognition in 2021. He appeared in all 13 games for the Green and White, eight of which were starts, including the final seven games of the year. Ramirez, in 2021, ranked 10th in the MAC with 6.0 sacks, a then-career-best mark. He was third on the team with 63 total tackles (32 solo, 31 assisted), and led the team with 12 tackles for loss. Ramirez helped EMU force 15 regular-season turnovers a season ago, forcing a team-leading three fumbles along the way. The Lake Alfred, Fla. native also earned All-MAC accolades in 2020.

The East-West Shrine Bowl, played inside Allegiant Stadium, home to the National Football League's Oakland Raiders, is a college football showcase that allows the best players from around the nation to display their talents in front of scouts from every NFL team, and multiple coaching staffs. When in Las Vegas, Ramirez will be coached directly by the defensive line coach from a to-be-selected NFL team. Each season, the NFL selects two coaching staffs from around the league to serve as the coaches for both the East and West teams in the bowl game.

More detailed information about the game, including full rosters and coaching staffs, will be announced in the coming months. The game will be aired on NFL Network, and tickets are available for purchase.
